Projectile Motion—Type 3 Problems

1.  After a sub-par mousetrap car trial, Kason and Ben decide to heave their vehicle from a bridge in their neighborhood. Kason throws the car at 17.2 m/s, at a 48˚ angle above the level of the bridge. If the bridge is 9.70 m above the ground below, (a) what is the car’s final velocity just before hitting the ground? (b) How long does the car spend in the air? (c) How far away from the base of the bridge does the car land on the ground?

2.  Josh is outside shoveling the walk one blustery morning, when he hears Rianna yell, “Think fast, Mlinek!” Just then, a well-packed snowball lands on the ground just in front of Josh. Rianna threw the snowball at an upward angle from the top of her deluxe snow fort, 2.91 m above the ground and 9.18 m away horizontally, and the snowball took 1.60 seconds to reach Josh. (a) What was the initial launch-velocity of the snowball? (b) What was the final velocity of the snowball, just before it hit the ground?

3.  A bitter argument between Maura and Anna at the Mall resulted in Maura’s cell phone being thrown from the 2nd floor railing down to the water fountain on the 1st floor, 6.75 m below. The phone was thrown with an initial velocity of 10.6 m/s, 29˚ below the level of the floor. (a) How long was the phone in the air? (b) How far, horizontally, did the phone travel from the upper rail before landing in the water? (c) What was the final velocity of the phone just before hitting the water?

4.  Frustrated after failing to put the steel sphere into the trough, Garet throws a rock from the courtyard up toward the windows of Room 248. He misses the glass, and the rock lands on the roof, 1.25 m from the edge. If Garet was standing 8.50 m away from the building and he threw the rock with a velocity of 17.9 m/s, 61º above the horizontal, how tall is the building?
