  1. Briefly describe your garden project including its major goals. Please include a description of activities. (150 words or less)

Napoleon’s primary business district is an awkward turn on Highway 3, which runs through town. We would like to involve all 4-H members in planting and maintaining hanging planters to distinguish our Main Avenue with bright, live flowers. This will beautify our most important area of town and guide visitors to the heart of our community. The initial planting and placing will be our main project. We would plan to follow up on the planting project with a tour of a local orchard and garden for an additional educational component. The orchard/garden tour will encourage additional tree and garden plantings for both fresh produce and citywide curb appeal.

  1. How will your project make a difference to itschildren? (150 words or less)

Youth will learn community service, planting skills and varieties hardy to our area. They will also be communicating and cooperating with the city’s maintenance crew and community volunteers to complete the initial planting. This would be a wonderful addition to our community to instill a sense of pride. The orchard owner and extension agent have vast information to share with youth on extensive varieties of trees, plants and flowers. They will learn in a manner that they can share skills and information to encourage plantings at home. Sheldon is planning a weed identification lesson with the orchard/garden. Identifying pests is the first step in getting rid of them and preventing their spread.

  1. How will your project make a difference in your community? (150 words or less)

With the business district being an awkward turn off the main highway and down a side street, it is difficult for someone passing through to see Napoleon’s vast offerings. We believe that the hanging planters will lead visitors toward our restaurants, retail stores and service providers. It will also make a beautiful attraction to all who frequent our Main Avenue. This is a launching of a long-term community beautification project. We hope the tree and garden lessons encourage many at-home plantings for community-wide beautification and garden produce.
