Summary

Mars Petcare will change the existing retort primary cooling water circuits from a "run-through" to a "recycling" method in three of its factories (in France, Lithuania and the United Kingdom). The target of the project is to save water, waste water and energy (gas) and reduce the CO2 output. Due to the given batch process of the retorts it is necessary to install a water storage and treatment system to keep the cooling water always at the correct quality level during recycling.

The treatment includes mainly water filtering, water quality checks, micro filtering, UV light disinfection, system protection with ozone dosing, water storage tanks, pumps and instrumentation.

The project is foreseen to be executed stepwise, site after site because of different installation situations and learning transfers. The first project will start in October 2010 and the last project will be finished in April 2012.

Expected and/or achieved results

The expected savings per year are significant reductions on cooling water consumption (90% or more) in line with a significant reduction of the total site waste water. In sites where we actually retain the water completely (UK) or partially (F) in the retorts, the project will deliver a huge energy (gas) savings (close to 50%). The gas reduction will reduce the CO2 output.
