The Government has approved through an Emergency Ordinancethe creation of the Forest Guard. The Guard willbe taking over the attributes of the current forestry and hunting commissioners.

The number of persons with control dutieswill grow quite strongly, from the current 399,up to 617 once the Emergency Ordinance will be applied. According to the Government, among the measures proposed, there will be a ”reorganization of the nine forestry and hunting commissions aimed at protecting and preserving the national forests.” During the same bulletin,we can see that the yearly volume of illegally cut woodis around 9 million cubic meters, accounting for a third of the amount of wood cut yearly at national level.

Multiple people who signed the petition launched by the de-clic.ro platform told Clean Romania that they have received subpoenasfor Monday, 29 June, to show up at their respective Police section, and attend hearings as witnesses in a criminal case (!?). The de-clic.ro petition urged people tosupport a public letter addressed to Prime Minister Victor Ponta, the Minister for Environment, Grațiela Gavrilescu, Minister for Internal Affairs, Gabriel Oprea, and to the University of Bucharest provost, Mircea Dumitru. The letter was calling forthe resignation ofmultiple heads of public institutions who have allowed the conflict concerning the construction of a small hydropower planton the White River, in the Dinosaur Geopark to escalate.A number of environmentalists and journalists were attacked on the 24th ofMay 2015.More so, those who signed the petition were invited, should they agree with the platform’s proposals, to each send a letter protesting these developments, from their personal email address. Theletters had to include their personal data (such information is necessary for the letter to be considered a petition by authorities).

The judge also spoke about theinstruments that she and her colleagues useto acquire godsthat have illegally ended up in the hands of people who are under criminal investigations.
