Problem 4.1.1 Martian Base Design Problem

Introduction

The Martian Base Design Problem will focus on the preliminary design of a new habitat on a Martian site. During the design process, you will research and 3D Print a stackable shape that can be utilized in the modular construction of the Martian base. You will review reference materials to identify the constraints associated with the transport, placement, and construction of the Martian base. Finally, with these considerations, you will create renderings of your concept.

Equipment

  • Engineering notebook
  • Pencil
  • 3D architectural/ CAD software
  • Computer with Internet access
  • Mission to Mars reference sheet
  • Topographic map of site

Procedure

Work with a project design team to apply the knowledge learned in previous units and the additional information presented during Lesson 4.1.1

CONCEPTUALIZATION

  1. Review the references from the Mission to Mars Reference sheet. Feel free to research any additional information. Prepare a listing of constraints for the project associated with:
  • Transportation of the modular components
  • Placement of the Martian Base
  • Materials for construction of the Martian Base
  • Working on Mars
  1. Review the references associated with a stackable design. Brainstorm shapes of parts that can be efficiently stacked in the payload of an Orion rocket that will later be used for the modular construction of the Martian base.
  • Prepare multiple sketches and cut out parts in paper to check the “fit” of the parts.
  • Determine the dimensions of the parts so that they will fit in the payload of an Orion rocket. Create a Part file and Drawing file in Autodesk of your parts.
  1. 3D Print multiple parts to model the fit and the construction of the modular base.
  2. Using the dimensions of your modular base and the topographic site map, as well as other constraint considerations, decide on the placement of the base.
  • Prepare a site plan showing the base location
  1. Consider the floor plan for the Martian base. Revisit the considerations/constraints for working in the base.
  • Prepare a list of codes for the construction of the base module.
  • Prepare a floor plan with appropriate notations.
  1. Consider the entire Martian base:
  • Form and Image - How should the exterior features of the base impact the surroundings visually and psychologically? Should the project blend into the environment or stand apart?
  • Function – What major functions should take place in the base?
  • Criteria –What types of spaces are required? What size should the spaces be? What is the total size of the project?
  1. Prepare an exterior rendering of the Martian base.
  2. Prepare a power point presentation of your Martian Base conceptualization. It should include:
  • Cover Page with Title, Group names
  • List of constraints
  • Brainstorming sketches for modular parts
  • Annotated drawing file of parts
  • Image of 3D printed parts
  • Site Plan
  • List of Codes
  • Floor Plan
  • Exterior Rendering
  1. Present your power point, explain the considerations of the design.
