STP 226 NAMES:
Spring 2006
Project 1 (25 points) Due Thursday Feb. 16
· Consider the population of students on the Main Campus at ASU. You can also consider other large population. Make sure to clearly define what is your selected population.
· Select a random sample of size 40 representative of your population. Clearly describe how you selected your sample.
· Ask your subjects one question that will produce a numerical response. For example: How many times per week do you go to the gym? How old are you?...
Make note of a GENDER of the respondent.
· Include the raw results of your survey with the project (typed)
· Analyze your data by producing the following:
1. Frequency and relative frequency table for your responses.
2. Draw a Histogram of your data, decide what is the shape of the distribution
(for example: approximately symmetric, left or right skewed, bimodal...)
3. Compute the Mean, Mode, Median and Standard deviation of your data.
Make comments about what the numbers tell you about your data, its center,
shape of the distribution and amount of variability.
4. Compute what % of your data falls within 3 standard deviations of the mean? Is it consistent with the “Three St. Deviations Rule”?
5. Compute Quartiles and IQR for your data and use it to check if there are any outliers. If so, list them, if there are no outliers, state it.
6. Divide your data up into two groups by GENDER.
· Show the % distribution of genders by drawing a pie or a bar chart.
· Compute 5 numbers summary of your responses for each gender and make side by side box plots for each gender.
· Compute the Mean and Standard deviation of your responses for each gender.
· Conclude this part of the project by describing differences and/ or similarities between the genders. Clearly explain what are the differences (or why there are no differences). Use your plots and numbers computed in your argument.
7. Can you extend your conclusions to all of your population? Clearly explain why or why not. (Consider carefully how you collected your data, is your sample truly random and representative?)
Note: Your paper has to be typewritten. All computations can be performed using the the computer or with a calculator. All the graphs may be done using a computer or by hand. If you graph by hand, make sure to produce very neat graphs.
