Role Title: Programme Support and Donor Development Volunteer

Location: Juba, South Sudan

Reports to: Country Leader of Sudan and South Sudan

Expenses:Accommodation and Living allowance

Length of role:Initially 6 months

Context of Role

The Leprosy Mission (TLM) is a global Christian network of organisations active in over 50 countries across the world andhas been working in Sudan directly since 1989to support people affected with leprosy and disabilities. Since South Sudan gained independence TLM has expandedits work to include both Sudan and South Sudan and our team has been in South Sudan since May 2012. The role of Programme Support and Donor Development Volunteer offers an exciting and challenging opportunity to volunteer within our small, local team as we set up and begin our work in South Sudan.

Scope of Role

Support the Country Leader to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of programmes by building the capacity of staff and partners in the areas of South Sudan where TLM operates. Specifically this will includeidentifying and developing new donor opportunities and introducing new skills in socio-economic development,advocacy, empowerment and partner monitoring.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Donor and Partner Development
  • Support the Country Leader and build in-country capacity to identify donor opportunities and create and maintain relationships with donors. Activities would include:

Engage with local donors/partners to identify and access local funding/grants/calls. Develop in-country capacity to pro-actively identify and access donors and funding opportunities.

Build donor awareness of the need for TLM’s work in South Sudan and liaise with Supporting Countries to support their fundraising/awareness raising work.

Support the Country Leader where necessaryin preparing for/presenting at relevant donor/partner meetings and, if requested, attending meetings on behalf of the Country Leader.

  • Assist in the planning and hosting of programme visits by staff, donors and partner agencies
  1. Programme Support
  • To help staff and partners to build capacity in areas such as advocacy, empowerment, socio-economic development, reporting, and grant management.
  • To support the Country Leader in developing partnerships with relevant NGO and government partners, and building the capacity of partners in Project Cycle Management, to strengthen best practice and in-country project management.
  • to assist with project writing and build in-country capacity to incorporate donor needs/interest into project development whilst ensuring the needs of people affected by leprosy and disability are prioritized.
  • There maybe additional requests for volunteering made by the Country Leader.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

TLM is an explicitly Christian charity and this role will require the successful candidate to volunteer within an interdenominational environment.

Essential skills

  • Empathy with the Christian ethos of The Leprosy Mission.
  • Significant, proven experience working/volunteering with marginalised communities at the field level. Very strong understanding of the challenges facing poor and marginalised groups and the reality of their lives and a true commitment to bring about change for these people.
  • Significant experience working/volunteering with a range of donors (i.e. institutional, corporate, individuals etc) and stakeholders.
  • Be able to volunteer in a manner that respects the people of South Sudan and volunteer within their culture.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, mentoring and capacity building skills.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, collaborate within a team and assist others
  • Commitment and ability to build staff/volunteer capacity in areas such as advocacy, empowerment, socio-economic development (eg. livelihoods, education, etc),disability and inclusion, reporting, and grant management.
  • Proven ability to volunteer in a multicultural team and independently.
  • Experience of volunteering in a post-conflict,potentially unstable, insecureand logistically challenging environment.
  • Willingness to live and volunteer inbasic conditions and maintain a sense of humour in challenging and high pressure situations.

Desirable skills

  • Masters degree in International Development or a related subject or equivalent field level experience.
  • Experience of working with In country partners
  • Experience working with institutional donors (i.e. ECHO, DFID, WHO etc).
  • Experience working in Sudan or South Sudan.
  • Experience working on health projects/programmes or with health organisations.
  • Experience working with people affected by leprosy and/or disability.

Volunteer Terms

  • The position will be based in Juba but will require some field visits to Jonglei state or other states as needed
  • Be able to offer 35 volunteer hours per week
  • Accommodation in Juba will be supplied and living expenses will be provided
  • Flights to and from South Sudan are at the volunteer’s expense
