President’s Message

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a safe and fun Holiday. Now it is time for us to get back to work for our companies and for ourselves.

Let’s not call it a New Year Resolution, but set one goal for improvement for yourself and for your job – with a date when you will complete it. Check out a new book, re-read a book that inspired you in the past, take a class, start attending our Professional Development Meetings, attain a professional certification – take the first step to make a change in your life.

If you want to refresh/update your general supply chain knowledge or start on the path for CPIM certification, the chapter plans to hold a Basics of Supply Chain Management review class this spring. The details are still being firmed up – will probably meet Thursday nights starting 19-February and the cost will be $490 per attendee ($375 without student work book). The location is not confirmed yet, stay tuned for more details. If you are interested, please contact me.

I hope to see you at January’s PDM – The Race to Implement the Internet of Things. Bring a friend or coworker with you – this subject will have wide appeal. If there is anything that I can do to help you, please contact me directly at , 828-459-8466 (office) or 828-267-2268 (home).

January Program

Humans have been using the Internet to communicate for the past couple of decades, a lifetime for some. Have you ever communicated, using the Internet, with a thing? Have you ever asked your GPS system or your phone for directions to a destination? If so, you have used the Internet to talk with things! Now for a really “way out” question; have any of your things used the Internet to talk with other things? Does your “smart meter” tell you the best time to run the air conditioner or heat hot water because of variable energy prices? Does your car analyze traffic patterns to help you decide the fastest route? Does your personal robot sense your mood when you come in from work and decide what music would be most soothing? Not yet? These and other applications are part of the Internet of Things (IoT), and are coming soon, ready or not. While operations managers and supply chain managers will be under pressure to implement IoT, management accountants will be charged with making sure there will be an acceptable return on investment. Come to the meeting, prepared to share in this “hot topic.”

January Speaker

Richard E. “Dick” Crandall is a professor in the College of Business at Appalachian State University (ASU) in Boone, North Carolina. He is certified in production and inventory management (CFPIM) and as a supply chain professional (CSCP) by APICS – The Association for Operations Management. He received his Ph.D. in production/operations management from the University of South Carolina, and is a registered professional engineer (PE) and a certified public accountant (CPA). Prior to becoming an academic, Dick worked as an industrial engineer, a management consultant, and in executive positions for manufacturing and service companies.

Membership News

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and had some quality time spent with family and friends. Our December holiday social was a joyous occasion with a fine meal, live music and a generous outpouring of gifts for the family we sponsored for Christmas. Now that we're back to our regular PDM schedule, we have several individuals to recognize that have joined the chapter in November and December. Please welcome the following 12 new Student Associates:

Nicholas York, Morgan Taylor, Collin McDonald, Jeffrey Jones, Jordan Hale, Christopher Dobson, Benjamin Cook, Madison Boaz, Andrew Bailey, Fletcher Happer, Casey Noonan, and Anthony Kazaglis

In addition, Byron Bradley joined as an Enterprise Professional with Southeastern Container in Kings Mountain. We are pleased to welcome all to Foothills and hope to some folks during the PDM on January 8th where they will be formally recognized.

See you all soon!

Giving Back to the Community

This year the APICS Foothills Chapter reached out to the ECCCM (Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry) organization in order to locate a family in need of assistance for Christmas. The family that we supported included a husband and wife with two young sons. Neither parent is able to work outside the home, as the father is on disability and the mother is constantly attending to their two young boys, ages 7 and 9. The eldest son has leukemia. He goes to treatments at Baptist Hospital on a monthly basis and was currently battling pneumonia when the gifts were delivered. The chosen family was provided with much needed household goods, multiple gifts for the children and parents, and a $200.00 gift card to Wal-Mart.

On a personal note, this was my first year directing the Community Relations role for our chapter and while I’m personally used to giving to various organizations on a regular basis, I found this particular project to be significantly different. The difference was that I’ve never been in personal contact with the recipients before this event. It’s difficult to express in words how amazing this experience was for me and my family as we delivered an entire Christmas to another family. Somehow all those talks I’ve had with my child came to life. The real meaning behind Christmas is giving to others with no expectations other than to see the joy on their faces. The family we supported through APICS was very grateful for our help and I’m especially proud of our chapter for continuing to support our community.

Thank you to all who donated this year!

C-Bar Award

The APICS Foothills Chapter received the 2014 CBAR Platinum Award designation, an admirable accomplishment for an APICS chapter. As a member of an APICS Platinum Award Winning Chapter, the CBAR designation signifies your chapter’s commitment to providing an exceptional membership experience.
