Program Name: Name that Founder, 2000

This founder prepared our sisterhood’s first constitution. She was elected president that first day, and held office for three years. She was known for being cheerful and bright, exciting and stimulating and her inspiring talks were in great demand at conventions and meetings. She was a writer on many subjects and a great reader.

NAME:

It was this founder who suggested the star as our emblem. She loved the poetry of motion and (quote) “her Methodist foot was in grave danger under the spell of rhythmic motion and general merriment.” Because she enjoyed dancing, she left the MethodistChurch to affiliate with the Episcopalians.

NAME:

This founder was the first to wear the star in public. She had a deep religious conviction and it was she who said, “P.E.O. is love in action.” She married a minister who later became the president of Iowa Wesleyan, the birthplace of P.E.O. She remained in Iowa and served P.E.O. until the end of a long life. She was with us longer than any other Founder.

This founder chose the colors for the new society and her philosophy was the unselfish one of service to others. She did not marry, but lived with her widowed mother, cheerfully caring for her until her death. She taught at the “not so pretty” StateIndustrialSchool for Boys reclaiming many boys for worthwhile citizenship.

This founder was one of a pair who first decided to form a society of their own calling the other seven founders to meet together in the Music Hall of Old Main of the IowaWesleyanCollege. She was known as one who was happy, sweet, understanding and possessing a sunshiny quality. She married and had two sons, but lived less than a decade after graduation.

This founder led the six other founders to break fashion tradition at college commencement by rejecting the accepted gloomy black silk dress in favor of dresses the colors of the rainbow paid for by picking gooseberries. She was described as the youngest, prettiest and sunniest of the seven, having the finest clothes, most beaus and the most of this world’s goods. With these advantages, she did not recognize class or circumstances but admired and exemplified true character.

This founder was one of the pair who first decided to form a society of their own calling together the other seven founders. She was known to be lovely, smart and talented; calm and courageous and self-controlled. She was a great worker for women’s rights and was a friend of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Stanton and Frances Willard.
