This handbook has been prepared for you, to acquaint you student with the various policies that are relevant to Harris Training Institute, as well as those policies designed to meet standards and requirements defined by the North Carolina Department of Facility Services.

Our classrooms and laboratories provide the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for certification and entry level employment in the health care field.

The Nurse Aide I Refresher course is designed to provide individuals previously listed on the Nurse Aide I Registry with a review of knowledge, skills and abilities that must be demonstrated on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination.

INSTRUCTOR – STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

At Harris Training Institutethe instructor and the student work together towards the student’s success.

The student is responsible for attending all classes on time and being fully prepared to participate in the days assigned class activities. The school does not permit a student to attend class with a child or leave a child unattended on campus while attending class.

The instructor is responsible for maintaining an environment conducive to learning by acknowledging and demonstrating respect for the diversity of our students.

The instructor is responsible for being prepared for each class, starting the class on time, and providing a full period of effective instruction throughout the course. The instructor is also responsible for providing students with complete information on the objectives and requirements of the course, for providing information concerning available resources to students outside the classroom and/or laboratory, for maintaining an accurate record of attendance on all students.

ATTENDANCE

Regular class attendance is an important part of student success. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire class period. Students are required to attend a minimum of 90% of class hours to successfully complete the course.

Arriving late and leaving early disrupts the learning environment. Students who have a pattern of arriving late and/ or leaving early will be place on an “Action Plan. Failure to complete the required number of class/lab hours will result in in suspension due to unsatisfactory attendance. See school catalog for Conditions of Suspension.

DRESS CODE

Classroom:

Students are expected to dress neatly and appropriately for class and other school functions.

Due to allergies, colognes or perfumes should not be worn in the class or clinical setting.

Jewelry and Ornaments:

Necklaces, bracelets, and other non-functional ornaments may not be worn in the laboratory setting. Nails should be cut short to prevent injuring a classmate. Earrings must be conservative in style and small. Sunglasses may not be worn in the classroom unless prescribed by a physician or optometrist.

MISCELLANEOUS

Cell phones and Pagers:

A.The use of pagers, cell phones or laptops isnot to be on in class or lab. This is disruptive to the learning process. In the event of an emergency, the receptionist can be notified at 224-8080, and you will be notified.

B.Students will have ample time to use their phones during the scheduled break.

STUDENT CONDUCT

  1. All students are expected to conduct themselves with the courtesy and dignity customary of the nursing profession.

B.Nursing is a profession dealing with human life; therefore, unprofessional conduct such as lying, cheating, stealing, as well as the use of alcohol or unprescribed drugs while in class is prohibited. The use of prescription or over-the-counter medication that may alter your ability to perform required duties must be reported to your instructor immediately.

  1. All students must follow the policies of Harris Training Instituteas they pertain to conduct, dress, grooming, jewelry, ornaments, and related matters.

D.The student will be withdrawn from the course for harassment and/or assault, verbal, physical, or sexual in nature , of a college employee, student, or visitor. Violations may result in probation, suspension, or expulsion from the school.

Refund Policy

REFUND POLICY

A refund shall not be made except under the following circumstances:

  1. A 100 percent refund shall be made if the class in which the student is officially registered is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment.
  2. A 100 percent refund shall if the student officially withdraws prior to the first day of class(es) as noted in the school calendar.
  3. A 75 percent refund shall be made for semester courses if the student officially withdraws from class(es) prior to or on the official 25 percent point of the semester.
  4. The student activity fee, lab fee, technology fee, and professional liability insurance fee (if applicable) will be 100 % refunded when a student officially withdraws prior to the first day of class. These fees are not refundable once the class begins.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

During the academic year, the following steps and procedures will be in effect to allow for timely and well-communicated college closing decisions.

In the event of hazardous weather, including such events as heavy snow or ice accumulation on a day prior to a regular class day, the initial decision to cancel or delay the next day's classes will be made prior to 7 a.m. of the class day in question. A notice will be placed on the school's web site or the school’s voicemail (919) 224- 8081.

On days when classes have been cancelled due to hazardous weather, heavy snow, or ice accumulation, decisions on the following day's classes will be made prior to 6 p.m., if possible. Decisions regarding evening classes will be made prior to 3 p.m. on the day the evening classes are scheduled.

N. C. NURSE AIDE I COMPETENCY TESTING

Students completing the Nurse Aide I Refresher course are eligible to register to take the Nurse Aide Competency Exam. Harris Training Institute has been approved as an In-Facility Test Site. Students who register for the Nurse Aide I competency Exam on the last day of class are eligible to take the Nurse Aide Exam at Harris Training Institute.

Test: Consists of a written and skills exam.You will have two chances to repeat the exam if you do not pass it the first time.

Application for Testing:

All registrations and payments for the Nurse aide I Competency Exammust be submitted to NACES Plus Foundation, Inc.

Cost: $101.00 written and skills

$24.00 repeat written

$77.00 repeat skills

Identification requirement documents: The following2 forms of ID are REQUIRED for testing :

  • social security card, AND
  • state or government ID, (example drivers license of state issued ID card),

NAME CHANGE NOTICE

If a name change has occurred since your previously listing on the NA I Registry, you MUST contact the NC Nurse Aide Registry at (919) 855-3969 to have your information updated PRIOR to registering for competency testing
