Assessment Results

  1. What were the results (Strengths and Weaknesses)?

b.)The class achieved an average of 4.42 or higher in all categories of the Preparing for Procedure Rubric. 7 students received all 5’s on this rubric. The vast majority did an outstanding job preparing for the procedure.

What was learned through analyzing these results?

a.) The students’ performance leading up to the procedure was excellent.

b.) During the actual procedure, students had difficulty with Core Objective #3 Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication as indicated by the scores on Instrument Transfer and Charting.

c.) The students had difficulty with Program Outcome #4 Develop positive work habits and interpersonal skills needed for employment as indicated by the score on HVE. They also difficulty with #8 Perform basic dental office procedures as indicated by the score on Charting.

d.)The instructor felt that all low scores were directly related to the number of students in the classroom.

  • The average number of students for the last 5 years has been 14. There are 19 students this year.
  • The instructor felt that she was not able to spend the one-on-one time with each student that was needed.
  • Since there were so many students to assess, the students who had to wait until the end seemed to be very nervous. The instructor saw the scores on the rubrics going down towards the end.

Action Plan Based on Results and Analysis

Based on the analysis of the results, what steps will be taken to improve student learning?

a.) No adjustment in instruction is planned for the Preparing for Procedure part of these two courses.

b.) During instruction on charting, the instructor is going to stress how important clinical documentation is.

c.) The instructor is going to look at splitting the assessment up into two days, or enlisting her co-worker to help during the assessment.

What goals will be set as result of the above changes in instruction?

a.) 80% of the students will average 90 points or more on the combined 98 point rubric. (This will not change from last year.)

b.) The average class score for each category of the rubric will be 12.
