Students, who indicate that they have sufficient computer knowledge and would not benefit from taking any of the above courses, have the opportunity to take the Computer Literacy Proficiency Examination. The examination will be administered in Testing Center. Students will be permitted two hours to take the exam.

What does the test consist of?

Jefferson College Operating System: Windows XP

Software: Microsoft Word

The computer literacy exam consists of two parts, a written portion and a computer application. The written portion consists of multiple choice questions as well as a section on naming screen parts. The computer application consists of creating a letter and editing it according to the directions.

Referral Process:

Step 1

After being referred to Testing Center, the student may go to Testing Center Services to take the exam. There is a $40.00 Test Administration Fee and a Posting Fee equivalent to one credit hour of tuition.

Step 2

After successful completion of the exam, the results will be forwarded to the Registrar and a letter will be sent to the student. The student’s academic transcript will reflect that the computer literacy requirement has been met.

It is important that the student know that he/she will not receive college credit for passing the exam. Passing the exam (80% Mastery) means the student has met the computer literacy requirement for graduation, but does not mean he/she will receive 1 hour of credit towards graduation.

Only those students who indicate that they are currently computer literate should be referred for the proficiency exam. All other students should be encouraged to take one of the approved computer literacy courses. It is also recommended that students be advised to enroll in one of the courses, or take the examination during the first two semesters of their academic program.

Additional Information:

The Computer Literacy exam is given at all three Jefferson College sites (i.e. Hillsboro, Arnold, and Northwest). No appointment is needed.
