LONGER BIO:
Carolyn Brown joins the School of Communication after working for MSNBC News and Fox News Channel as a producer of several national shows. She also worked as a producer in local news in San Francisco at KNTV and KRON-TV, WashingtonDC’s News Channel 8, and as a Senior Producer on Arizona Entertainment Weekly in Phoenix.
She began her news career at CBS News, The Early Show, and has also worked on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Cosby Show,The Chris Rock Show, and Geraldo.
Professor Brown has also published on MSNBC.com as a contributor and commentator.
Professor Brown launched her own media production venture, Deronda Productions, LLC in March of 2008.
Covering Tough Stories
As network news producer, Professor Brown covered Hurricane Katrina, producing weeks of live coverage for Fox News Channel, and the 1996, 2000 and 2004 presidential elections at CBS News, KRON-TV San Francisco, and Fox News Channel.
As a line producer at MSNBC News Professor Brown produced live coverage of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and coverage of the War in Iraq from day one. At Fox News Channel, Professor Brown was line producing live on the air with one of the first network confirmations of the Death of President Ronald Reagan. Professor Brown also produced graphics for the 2005 Iraqi Elections, the 2004 U.S. Presidential Election, and the Hurricane Katrina Coverage on Fox News Channel. One of her favorite professional experiences was working at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta for NBC Sports.
Commitment to Diversity
Professor Brown is committed to improving diversity in Newsrooms. According to reports cited by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Latinos make up only 4% of newsroom personnel at all daily English-language newspapers, and only 6% of all newsroom staffers at English-language TV news outlets.
Professor Brown is an active member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and the Colgate University Alumni of Color Organization. She has worked with the Colgate University Alumni of Color for years, mentoring minority students at her Alma Mater.
Education
Professor Brown has a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with a focus on Immigration and Ethnic Studies from NorthernArizonaUniversity and Bachelor Degree in Political Science and Art/Art History from ColgateUniversity.
Current Work
Professor Brown is currently working on completing a documentary film entitled On the Line. The film focuses on The Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, a vigilante group that patrols the United States border in search of undocumented border crossers. The film also follows Professor Brown’s struggles with her own identity, as the daughter of a Latin American immigrant, during her nearly two years spent documenting the Minutemen. “This film is about how we identify ourselves, who we are as Americans, and who we want to be,” says Professor Brown of On the Line.
A rough cut of the film has already screened at five locations in Arizona and New Mexico, including the Museum of Northern Arizona, and the Sin Fronteras Film Festival at the University of New Mexico. Professor Brown’s documentary work has been featured on NPR in Arizona, Dish Network, and various print publications in Arizona. The Cultural Diversity Council of the VerdeValley and the Jewish Cultural Endowment Fund, among others, have sponsored screenings.
Professor Brown is most recently interested in researching the history and growth of Spanish Language Television in the United States.
