Job purpose
This is a development role to create and shape innovative open research services, leading long-term institution-wide cultural change for the academic and research postgraduate community. Operating in a complex, fast-paced and challenging policy and compliance environment, the postholder will seek opportunities to influence sector developments and ensure funders’ requirements are met. This role will develop and iterate lean user focused services, audit frameworks and reporting; working with Faculties to achieve the requisite level of long-term engagement. This is a leadership role in this specialist area of expertise which will manage all components of the services including curation and storage of institutional assets and managing risk in relation to compliance, in particular for the REF. The post-holder will ensure public engagement with research outputs is maximised and aligned with impact strategies and that training to support open research is developed as an integrated element of research activity. They will work closely with the Associate Director Research Engagement providing input to overarching research strategy, deputising at meetings as required.
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities / % Time /
1. / Manage Open Access Services co-ordinating input from specialists across professional services; work with Faculties and Services to identify gaps and implement innovative solutions in response to a complex policy and transactional environment; balancing consistency of service with the specificity required by discipline, publisher and funder. / 10 %
2. / Manage the library repository team, developing staff, setting and monitoring objectives, iterating user feedback to inform continuing service improvement and maximise service impact. / 10%
3. / Develop and maintain substantial professional knowledge providing expert advice to all Faculties, acting as an ambassador for academic engagement with external open access requirements, influencing activity, sharing best practice and promoting long term cultural change; identify issues which have broad impact, providing advice and evidence to Associate Deans Research and other senior managers, and propose approaches which maximise efficiency and service quality. / 20 %
4. / Ensure the service operates appropriately within the relevant regulatory and policy frameworks, monitoring risk and employing relevant service standards, developing and implementing new approaches and policies as required. / 15 %
5. / Lead the development of, and support for, a network of Open Access Champions (staff nominated in Faculties to lead on open access compliance for REF and other funders), ensuring connectivity with existing networks and teams / 10 %
6. / Lead the development of open access training and support, working in partnership with Faculties, the Doctoral College and Research and Innovation Services to embed support and provide coherent pathways making links with related areas such as impact and use of metrics. / 10 %
7. / Work in partnership with other services to ensure that research outputs are effectively captured, recorded, stored and shared, maximising the exposure of research to public and academic audiences, including data exchange with national and international systems, and long term stewardship of institutional assets / 10 %
8. / Manage fixed-term projects, including externally funded projects with national project partners, negotiating with stakeholders and ensuring requirements are delivered to timescale / 10 %

Post holders are expected to work flexibly to support work assigned which may change over time. There is an expectation that the Open Research Development Manager will be proactive in building personal networks and developing knowledge of the research centres and objectives of areas of work assigned.
Post holders may be asked to contribute to evening or weekend working to support university, academic or library events and are expected to work at various campus locations to support the work assigned.

Experience of working in or with the Higher Education sector, particularly in research support.
