Born in 1952 in Wipperfürth. 1980 PhD. at the University of Kassel. 1982–1986 Research associate at the German Historical Institute London. 1986–1990 Academic advisor atthe Political Sciences Seminar at the University of Freiburg.1990 Postdoctoral thesis on Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Freiburg.1990–1997 Professor of Modern, especially Extra-European History atthe University of Hagen. 1997–1999 Professor of International Relations History at theInstitut Universitaire de Hautes Études Internationales in Geneva. Since 1999 Chair for Modern History (focusing on the 19th and 20th centuries) atthe University of Konstanz.

1996–1997 Fellow atthe Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. 1999 Gleim Prize for Literatureof the Town of Halberstadt. Since 2000 full member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academyof Sciences and Humanities. 2001 Anna KrügerPrizeof the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin. July 2001–June2002 Fellow-in-Residence at NIAS (Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study). Since 2004 member of Academia Europaea (London). October 2007–September 2008 Fellow of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Foundation (Munich). 2007–2011 Member of the Board of the Cluster of Excellence 16 (Cultural Foundations of Social Integration). 2009 NDR Non-Fiction Book Prize.
