Prof. Dr. Dieter Senghaas

Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Dieter Senghaas was born in 1940 in Geislingen/Steige. He studied Political Sciences, Sciology, History and Philosophy at the universities of Tübingen, Amherst (Mass.), Frankfurt and Ann Arbor (Mich.). PhD 1967 (on "Criticising Deterrence. A Contribution to a theory of International Policy"). From 1968 to 1970 he was engaged in research at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard University, Cambridge (Mass.); 1970 to 1978 he was team leader of a research group at the Hessischen Stiftung Friedens- und Konfliktforschung (HSFK). From 1972 to 1978 he was Professor of International Relations at the University of Frankfurt am Main and from 1978 until 2005 professor of International Politics, International Society, and especially of Peace, Conflict and Developmental Studies at The Institute for Intercultural and International Studies (InIIS) at the University of Bremen; since 2005 he has been Senior Fellow at InIIS.

Prof. Senghaas was research fellow at Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, Ebenhausen bei München from 1986 - 1987 and 1992 - 1994.

As academic peace expert he engaged himself in many organisations and societies and held positions including member of Executive Committee of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) from 1979 - 1985; member of the "Issue Group on Peace" of the International Social Science Council (ISSC) from 1985 - 1990, Paris; member of the Senate Comission of Peace and Conflict Research of the German Research Foundation Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) from 1990 - 1996; member of the Research Group for National Security "Internationale Sicherheit der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik" in 1991 in Bonn; member of the Committee of the Red Cross for Humanitarian International Law between 1995 - 1999 in Bonn and member of the Advisory Councils of the Federal Academy for Security Policy from 1995 to 2000 in Bonn. He is also member and on the advisory councils in several scientific and academic associations and organisations. Since 1973 he has been associate editor of the Magazine Leviathan. Zeitschrift für Sozialwissenschaft.

In 1987 he was awarded the "International Peace Research Award" and in 1999 the "Göttinger Friedenspreis" by Dr. Roland Röhl Foundation.

His main subjects of interests are: peace studies; military strategies; the dynamics of arms; arms control, disarmament studies; Third World; violence issues; analysis of international conflict formations; the problems of the civilizing process and peace theory; European and International Developments after the East-West-Conflict; developmental studies; the difficulty of peace in classical music.
