Project Planning Exercise

Enhance your project planning efforts and construct a critical path chart through a selected milestone. Begin planning your method of communicating your plan on the Dashboard of your team website.

Basic instructions:

  1. Identify tasks: Each team member chooses a group of related project tasks, at least some of which are currently incomplete. These could be drawn directly from your action items, if you have a good list. Each member should have unique tasks. For example, one team member could take tasks related to the formal presentation, another related to concept development activities, another related to final concept selection, another related to website development, …

2

  1. Get Specific: Write out the specific tasks associated with your group of related tasks with enough detail that others clearly understand what is to be done, not in a general sense but in terms of specific actions. Add a statement on the objective of each task, if it is not obvious.
  1. Plan Resources: Assign responsibility (who?) and any other resources (what?) that need to be scheduled. Use PERT and/or other methods to determine task durations (to estimate how much of your team member time will be required).

2

4.  Prioritize: First prioritize individually within your related tasks, based on importance and then on time sequencing (parallel, sequential, coupled,…) Then as a team discuss the tasks that each team member has planned. Make any changes needed, then combine them all based on priority (importance and time). Create a team PERT/CPM chart based on all of the tasks discussed and hand it in with the individual sheets at the end of class for review.

5.  Communicate: Look at the Project Dashboard suggestions and develop a plan for maintaining a project plan and status report, updated weekly, on the Dashboard page of your website. Implement by the end of Fall quarter.
