ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES

Wang Rong-yu

Director

Founder and Artistic Director of Golden Bough Theatre, Wang Rong-yu was born in a family of Taiwanese opera artists. Before setting up Golden Bough Theatre, Wang played major roles for many plays between 1988 and 1992 as the main member of U Theatre. In 1991, he was appointed U Theatre’s training manager.

Wang founded Golden Bough Theatre in 1993. As his works are inspired by Taiwanese folk culture, its aesthetics are distinct from modern theatre groups, which are influenced by Western theatre.

In 1994, he was invited by Cloud Gate Theatre of Taiwan to be the lead performer in Songs of the Wanderer. In 1998, Wang was awarded a prestigious Asian Cultural Council grant for his distinguished achievements in performance and directing.

His creations include Romeo & Juliet, Dice, She is So Lovely, Butterflies, Troy, Taiwan Opera / The Female Robinhood: Pai Hsiao-lan, Wading Through The Cho Shui River and, Stop the World.

Wu Peng-fong

Actor

Wu Peng-fong is the rehearsal director for Golden Bough Theatre. An excellent actor with exceptional stage presence, he boasts over 16 years’ experience performing in Taiwan’s modern theatre and movies.

Between 1993 and 1995, he was the rehearsal director for the Rive-Gauche Theatre Group and a training assistant at Gang-a Tsui Theatre. Wu joined Golden Bough Theatre in 1999 and became Wang Rong-yu’ partner, whom he knew for more than 10 years. He has performed major roles in the theatre’s plays and has also been the theatre’s assistant director.

Lin Pei-ann

Actress

Lin Pei-ann joined Golden Bough Theatre a year after it was established. From 1994 to 2000, she performed major roles in many of Golden Bough Theatre’s plays. She was also their curriculum development and training assistant during the same period.

Lin attended the Theatre Training & Research Programme at Practice Performing Arts School in Singapore from 2001 to 2003. Her creations include Chaos and 121°E, 23.5°N, performed by Golden Bough Theatre in 1998. Her present work, Flying Fear, a solo performance, premiered in 2004.

Si Dung-ling

Actor

Si Dung-ling is the training manager for Golden Bough Theatre. He has rich performing experience in modern theatre and has been invited to perform with theatre companies such as Performance Workshop, Rive-Gauche Theatre Group, Shambala Theatre Group, Godot Theatre Company and Stalker Theatre Group.

Si joined Golden Bough Theatre in 2001. In the last few years, he has performed major roles in the theatre’s plays such as Butterflies, She is So Lovely…, Dice and Romeo & Juliet.

He is currently pursuing a Masters in Performance degree at the Department of Theatre at Taipei National University of Arts.

Alice Huang

Actress

Alice Huang graduated from the Department of Chinese Literature at China Cultural University in 1999. She joined Golden Bough Theatre in 1997 and has performed major roles in plays such as She is So Lovely…, Dice and Romeo & Juliet.

Huang has also been invited to perform in many plays by groups such as Streamline Theatre, Off PW, Rive-Gauche Theatre Group, The Eyeball Loves The Globe, and SONG SONG SONG Children’s & Puppet Theatre.

Liu Shu-chuan

Actress

Liu Shu-chuan was a member of Sun Son Theatre from 2001 to 2003. She performed in Drumming with Lear and Drumming with Lear: ultimate edition, directed by Fu Hong-Tzeng. In 2004, she was invited to perform in Butterflies by Golden Bough Theatre.

Wu Chi-ling

Actress

Wu Chi-ling is a graduate of the Department of Drama at the National Taiwan College of Arts. She is a reporter at Pots Weekly, a singer and also works as a professional model. She was invited by Golden Bough Theatre to perform in Butterflies in 1999.

Lee Yun-chung

Actor

Lee Yun-chung has been a member of Golden Bough Theatre since 2000. His works include Taiwan Opera, The Female Robin Hood: Pai Hsiao-lan, and Butterflies.

He graduated from the Department of International Trade at Aletheia University in 2001. After a stint in the army, Lee returned to Golden Bough Theatre and was the rehearsal assistant of She is So Lovely…, which toured in Taiwan in 2003.

Yu Hui-fen

Actress

Born in 1970, Yu Hui-fen obtained her Masters from the Institute of Sociology and Anthropology at National Tsing Hua University in 1996. She was a member and an actress of U Theatre between 1990 and 1992.

Yu is a founding member of Golden Bough Theatre. In the last 11 years, her roles in the company has taken her from actress and executive planner to administrative director, producer and scriptwriter. She has written plays such as Romeo & Juliet (adaptation), Dice, She is So Lovely…, Butterflies and The Roof (adaptation).

Wang Pin-kuo

Actor

Wang Pin-kuo first performed in the premiere of Butterflies in 1999, when he was still in his mother’s womb. Now 4½ years old, he will be performing on stage again in Butterflies.
