Product Data Sheet - SwiftDeck 19mm and 32mm Decking

Product Description

SwiftDeck has been developed to make the tedious fixing of timber decking less back breaking and many times faster. SwiftDeck is a system of a pre-grooved timber decking boards, and a clip that fixes to thesideof deck joists.

With a simple click lengths of decking can be fixed into position accurately and securely with minimal visual fixings. Ordinary decking requires approx. fifty screws or nails and tedious spacing and measuring to fix down a single square metre - SwiftDeck is a simple bead of adhesive and a push of the board. With the SwiftDeck system, Decking boards simply lock into the patented SwiftDeck cliprail to secure it for good. Quickly and easily!!

SwiftDeck is supplied in a range of Durability Class 1 and Durability Class 2 Australian timbers. All products are fully dried and dressed. Also available on order basis is a range special surface finishes or pre coating.

Sub-Frame of stumps, bearers and joists - just like a normal deck.

Installation Instructions

SwiftDeck 19mm decking is designed for maximum joist spacing of 450mm.

SwiftDeck 32mm decking is designed for maximum joist spacing of 600mm.

Joists must sit on top of bearers, or have at least 35mm on one face free to allow fitting of SwiftDeck Clips.

NOTE: Ensure joists are clean. Adhesive will not perform on dirty joists, and a quick scrape with a chisel or belt sander will usually ensure a great surface. Primer may be needed for some porous timbers see relevant adhesive manufacturer’s directions for more information regarding your situation.

IMPORTANT – Follow Instructions carefully for a simple trouble free installation

1.Secure the first edge board of the deck using conventional fixings, or ‘secret nailing/screwing’ in the rebate in side of board, ensuring straightness - as all other boards will follow this set out.

SwiftDeck Edge Boards (clip groove only on 1 side) are available in 5.4m set lengths.

2.Locate SwiftDeck cliprail into the groove of the first board and fix to the joist. (using clouts, nail gun or screws).

NOTE: make sure all the lugs on the cliprail are touching the top of the joist. If joist is a little twisted, fit to high side.

3.Place a bead of flexible polyurethane adhesive on top of the joist, between the clips. The recommended adhesives fix the timber and accommodate its natural movement through the weather changes. Do not use silicone or hard setting construction adhesives.

4.(Important) Position SwiftDeck board on an angle with edge resting inside clip and then snap SwiftDeck boards into the cliprail. Depending on strength, this can be done by: hand, rubber mallet, stepping in with foot.

Longer boards need 2 people to ensure inside edge is located easily.

4a Where a join is required, do boards square, cut a section of cliprail and fix this to the other side of the joist – boards will meet over the center of the joist and each will be fixed by cliprail. A secret nail can be fixed in side of the board if desired, and recommended if board less than 1.5m.

4b If a lug is broken whilst installing the board, cut a small piece of SwiftDeck cliprail with a lug on it and fix into the opposite side of the joist. This will provide position and support for existing and subsequent board.

5. After installing 5 boards to fill clip, knock boards on edge with rubber mallet or handle of your hammer – back towards the deck you have already laid.

This will assist settling any boards that are not sitting exactly within the clips. Walk along installed boards to ensure they are well bedded in.

6.Make sure the entire perimeter of the deck is secured. This can be done using a timber border, securing by screw into the groove on the edge, or achieved by fixing the SwiftDeck Edge board conventionally (clip groove on only one side of board).

Tips and Notes

- Attach only enough cliprail to joists to accommodate 5-10 pieces of decking each time (i.e. 1-2 clips). Doing this automatically makes any slight adjustments needed to ensure clip lugs remain vertical across the deck. On wide decks it is wise to check measure 20 boards to ensure line.

- If any joists are twisted, place the clips on the high side, and then fit decking before attaching more cliprail.

- Use only polyurethane adhesive, as silicone will not stick to all SwiftDeck, and construction adhesives are too brittle to accommodate long term timber movement. Place a generous bead 8-10mm - or enough to cover the whole joist when the deck is squashed down on it.

The recommended adhesives listed below, carry a 10 Year Warranty, and are designed to last over 20 years. We have further commissioned specific testing of these products by Monash University to ensure they exceed the guidelines set out in the Australian Building Code when used in the SwiftDeck system.

- Recommended Adhesives (or equivalent):

- Sika, Sikaflex 11FC

- Bostik, Matrix FC

- If fitting long lengths, it is advisable to have extra person(s), to allow positioning of the board on an angle correctly before snapping into clips.

- Lugs on Swift Deck clips are occasionally broken when boards are not angled correctly prior to snapping in. Fixing a small piece of cliprail to the opposite side of the joist and the polyurethane adhesive will assure no issues arise from the odd broken lug.

- If cutting boards, it is preferable to span at least 3 joists. Additional secret fixings may be required on small sections, particularly when cutting in around pipework, steps, etc.

- Joined set lengths are the same as any finger joined board, and are very strong when supported and fixed correctly. The joins on the boards are made on the same machine we make F17 structural timber, and test results return on average over 3 times the strength required by Aust. Standards.

Lengths can break at the join if unsupported pressure is placed on the joins – such as carrying long lengths so they flex excessively. A little care in carrying before installing will ensure no breakages.

If a board does break, it can be installed with a clip either side of the joist as per random lengths.

Quantities

SwiftDeck 86mm coverage is 90mm (including the gap). SwiftDeck 65mm coverage is 70mm (including the gap).

4.2 SwiftDeck clips are needed per square metre, based on 450mm joist spacing.

Fixing the decking boards to Steel Joists

This practice is not always successful because the screws normally provided are not suitable for fixing timber to steel. During periods of higher humidity, the expanding timber may cause the screws to fail in shear. It is recommended that the decking boards be nailed or screwed to a timber batten affixed above or beside the steel joist.
