PROCEDURES AND RULES FOR THE FOODS LAB

EVERY STUDENT using the food lab is expected to follow the procedures and rules described in this document. Failure to do so may result in points lost on the lab grade or a loss of lab privileges for that day. In this case, the student’s lab grade will be a zero.

  1. Students are expected to be on time. We have 47 minutes to complete the lab and time is precious. Late students will receive a 5point deduction.
  2. Students are required to pull all hair back away from face and off the shoulders. If you do not bring something for your hair, you will be given a rubber band by the teacher.
  3. Students should remove rings, dangling bracelets and long necklaces.
  4. Students will wash their hands after fixing their hair and putting on the apron.
  5. Students with long fingernails will be required to wear latex gloves. This is for sanitary reasons. Hands should be washed first before putting on the gloves.
  6. Student will wear aprons during the lab. Aprons should be removed before going to the restroom.
  7. Open cuts and sores on the hands must be covered. Students will wear a band-aid or a finger cot supplied by the teacher. In the case of large wounds, gloves may be required.
  8. Students should not wear open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops on lab days. This is a safety issue as well as a sanitation issue. Exposed toes and feet are more vulnerable to injuries from hot liquids, dropped knives and broken glass. Students who choose to wear this type of footwear on lab days will receive a 5 point deduction.
  9. Students are required to stay in their assigned kitchens. Do not visit students in other kitchens.
  10. Students are assigned kitchen duties. Everyone shares the work and everyone has the opportunity to cook as well as wash the dishes.
  11. Students that are absent on lab days are required to make up the lab at home or receive a zero. Students completing the lab at home must bring a sample to school and a note signed by the parent stating that the student completed the work on their own.
  12. Kitchens are inspected by the teacher at the end of each lab. Points will be deducted for: wet/dirty dishes; dishes improperly placed; wet/dirty sinks; wet/dirty countertops; failure to replace towels and aprons.
  13. Wet towels and dirty aprons are to be placed in the laundry room. All apron strings should be tied together as demonstrated by the teacher.
  14. All kitchen trash should be deposited in the large blue cans. NO KITCHEN TRASH in the classroom receptacles.
  15. Beverages will be provided on occasion. At times when a beverage is not being served, students may bring juice, milk or kool-aid. NO SOFT DRINKS IN LAB.
  16. Students will not chew gum during lab. This is for sanitation reasons.
  17. Students are not allowed to bring foods prepared at home to share with the class.
  18. Horseplay will not be tolerated. Students that cannot control their actions will be asked to sit out the lab. They will receive a zero for the lab experience.
  19. Students will not be excused at any time during the lab to use the restroom. After the lab is completed and the kitchen is clean, a pass to the restroom may be issued.
  20. Students are expected to follow all safety procedures covered in class.
  21. Students are expected to follow all sanitary procedures covered in class.
  22. Students should practice good hygiene.
  23. Students should be respectful of the teacher and their fellow kitchen mates.
