Principles of Human Services and Education

Prerequisite: Grades: 9-10Credit: One (state)

This introductory level laboratory course that enables students to investigate careers in the human services and education clusters, including counseling and mental health, early childhood development, family and community, personal care services and education and training careers. Students will understand the basic knowledge and skills essential for success in either cluster.

Lifetime Nutrition and Wellness

Prerequisite: Grades: 10-11Credit: One-half (state)

We have all heard the saying “you are what you eat”. In our ever evolving global society this will become important to our lifetime of health and wellness. Students will develop knowledge and skills related to making informed choices regarding how our eating habits affect our way of life. The food labs will focus on healthy eating habits, safety and sanitation and management principles. Career exploration will include multiple areas of study including hospitality and tourism, education, human services, and health sciences.

Child Development

Prerequisite: Grades: 10-11Credit: One (state)

This course is designed to provide knowledge and skills related to the development, care, guidance and protection of children. It will promote the physical, emotional, social and intellectual development of children, including those with special needs. Career exploration will include multiple areas related to the care and education of children.

Child Guidance

Prerequisite: Grades: 10-11Credit: One (state)

Children are our future. In our culturally diverse society it is imperative that relationships with children are positive and developmentally appropriate based on each child’s needs and abilities. This course is designed for the student who is interested in a career working with and/or for the benefit of children in a variety of settings.

Practicum in Human Services

Prerequisite: Child Development and Child GuidanceCredit: 3 (state)

Practicum in Human Services provides occupationally specific training and focuses on the development of consumer services, early childhood development and services, counseling and mental health services, and family & community services careers. Content in the course is designed to meet the occupational needs and interests of students and should be based upon the knowledge and skills selected from two or more courses in a coherent sequence in the human services cluster. Instruction will be delivered through work-based delivery arrangements such as cooperative education, mentoring, and job shadowing.

Career Preparation

Prerequisites: A. Grade: 12Credit: Three (state)

B. Successful completion of a coherent sequence of courses within the Career & Technical Education offerings.

Want to begin gaining work experience in the cluster area you have been studying? This capstone course will allow students from all Career and Technical Education Clusters who have completed a coherent sequence of courses to begin gaining real world experience in a cooperative education learning environment. The course is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied knowledge and skills. Students will be required to have the skills necessary to secure a job in an approved training station; work a minimum of 15 hours per week; and provide their own reliable transportation. Teacher approval is required prior to enrollment in this course.
