______

Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Sumner Memorial High School. I am excited and honored to be leading SMHS forward into a new age of teaching and learning.

Our faculty and staff have been diligently working to create educational experiences that will provide exciting opportunities for students in their learning and exploration. I will be continually encouraging both faculty/staff and students to seek out new challenges in learning throughout the school year. Our aim is to create a culture of multiple learning experiences, whereby students can demonstrate the skills and abilities they achieve during the process.

In the interest of forward progress, there has been a tremendous amount of work completed by numerous individuals this summer regarding various aspects of SMHS. Most importantly, in regards to Proficiency Based Education, we have been working to ensure that our continued use of Mastery Connect to track student proficiency is transparent, consistent, and in the best interest of student learning. We will continue to work closely together to maintain practices and process that are always in the best interests of student achievement and learning.

The 2016-2017 school year will mark the final year that a graduating class of SMHS is assessed based on a traditional educational model. All grade levels will be educated using a proficiency-based model, however the graduating Class of 2017 is the only class to be assessed on a traditional educational model. The classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020 will be assessed using a 1-4 point proficiency-based grading model.

The work that lies ahead at SMHS this school year is tremendous, but that work is also vitally important for the future success of our young people. Our goal at Sumner is to develop each student by taking a creative approach to their education. On behalf of the faculty and staff at SMHS I wish you and your student(s) a most rewarding and successful school year.

Yours in Education,

Ty Thurlow
