Prince of Peace Catholic High School

2018-2019 Freshmen Scholarship Application Form

The following scholarships are available for students registered to attend Prince of Peace Catholic High School next fall as freshmen. The scholarships will be awarded to students who complete and return the attached application by April 17, 2018. Scholarship recipients will be selected by an independent scholarship selection committee of Prince of Peace parishioners. Freshmen can receive no more than two scholarships (unless there are insufficient applicants, in which case, students are eligible to receive more than two).

1)The THOMAS “PINKY” McDONNELL Scholarship was established in 1989 by the family of Mr. McDonnell, a 1948 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and a strong supporter of Catholic education in Clinton. The recipient(s) must be an eighth grade student(s) at Prince of Peace Catholic School.

2)The LEON McDONNELL Scholarship was established as a memorial to Leon, a dedicated and active supporter of Mater Dei High School. Leon was a 1958 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, and served on the St. Mary’s and Mater Dei Boards of Education from 1977 to 1987. The scholarship will be awarded to a current eighth grade student at Prince of Peace Catholic School.

3)The BERNARD “BUBS” MAYER Scholarship was established by the Mayer family and friends as a memorial to “Bubs” and his great love of and belief in Catholic education in Clinton, Iowa. Bubs was a Class of 1945 graduate of St. Mary’s and a lifetime Booster of St. Mary’s and Mater Dei High School. The recipient of this award will be an eighth grade student at Prince of Peace Catholic School.

4)The HARVEY SUEHL Memorial Scholarship was established in 2005 in honor of Harvey, who was a dedicated and enthusiastic supporter of “the Irish.” This scholarship is to be awarded to a current Prince of Peace eighth grade student.

5)The JOHN LINGLE Memorial Scholarship has been established by family and friends of John. John Lingle graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1956 and taught at St. Mary’s and Mater Dei High Schools from 1968 to 1990. During those 23 years he coached many outstanding students in basketball, baseball, football, golf and track. This scholarship will be awarded to an eighth grade student (from Prince of Peace or another school).

6)The PRINCE OF PEACE STUDENT COUNCIL Leadership Scholarship is annually funded by the Prince of Peace Catholic High School Student Council and will be awarded to a Prince of Peace Catholic School eighth grade student.

7)The DAVID POTTRATZ Memorial Scholarship was established in 2013. Mr. Pottratz is a 1961 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and passed away on April 27, 2012. David’s wife, Maggie (SMHS 1964), sons Rick (MDHS 1988) and Chris (MDHS 1989) will provide for a $500 scholarship in his honor through memorial gifts from family and friends. Mr. Pottratz was a Juvenile Probation Officer for 30 years. He coached Junior Baseball as well as other youth sports. He was a strong supporter of youth activities. The recipient of this scholarship must be a current eighth grade student(s) at Prince of Peace Catholic School.

8) The GEORGE MCANDREWS FAMILY Scholarship was established in 2015 by George McAndrews as a way to thank his parents for the Catholic education he received. George attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and went on to graduate from St. Mary’s High School in 1953. He was a member of the 1953 Iowa State Basketball Championship Team. George’s commitment to Catholic education extends to his own children who attended Catholic schools.

9) The THOMAS MCANDREWS FAMILY Scholarship was established in 2015 by Tom McAndrews in appreciation for the Catholic education he received at St. Mary’s for 12 years. Tom graduated in 1954 and was a member of the 1953 Iowa State Basketball Championship Team.

10) The 1953 IOWA STATE BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM Scholarship has been established by George and Tom McAndrews to honor the accomplishments and spirit associated with that historic championship.

11) The ROBERT SHANNON MEMORIAL Scholarship has been established by Robert’s older brother, John Shannon (SMHS 1962), family and friends. John wanted to do something that would keep Robert’s memory alive. Robert Shannon graduated from Clinton High School in 1968, was drafted and sent to Vietnam in 1969. On April 30, 1970, Robert received fatal injuries after subjecting himself to enemy fire as he rushed from his foxhole to trap insurgents, saving the lives of others. After his death, Robert was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal. By establishing this scholarship in the Prince of Peace School Foundation, Robert’s selfless acts of heroism will be recognized.

Additional High School Scholarship

11) The Deb Lind Scholarship was established in 1998 in memory of Deb Lind, who taught physical education and coached at St. Patrick’s School, North Catholic, Trinity Elementary and Mater Dei High School. The scholarship was established by Deb’s family and friends after her death in 1997. It was supported for eight years with proceeds from Deb’s Dash, an annual road race. Two scholarships will be awarded, one each to a male and female high school student. The recipients will be selected in a blind ballot by the faculty of Prince of Peace Catholic High School. No application is necessary for this scholarship.

If you wish your student(s) to be considered for Need Based Scholarships you, as the Parent/Guardian, should complete the following steps.

1) Complete this page

2) Attach a copy of the parent/guardian’s 2017 Federal Income Tax Return

- include all schedules, but do not need to include worksheets

- white out names, social security numbers, address, bank account numbers, any other identifying information from tax return

- write your student’s name in the upper right hand of the first page of your tax return – this is to make sure it stays with the rest of the application. The name will be eliminated before making copies for the review committee.

- you will need to do this for each student

3) Make sure your part of the scholarship application is submitted with your student(s) portions of application.

4) Complete and submit to the school office a Financial Aid application and required documentation by April 17th. You can find the Financial Aid Application on the school website: , click on Registration or call the school office and request it be sent home with your child.

If you do not wish for your student(s) to be considered for Need Based Scholarships, you do not need to complete this page and your student can begin with SECTION THREE.
