Primary document search

Expectations: Each person in your group will actively research all areas and combine your answers to form one document to present to the class. Divide the work equally and document each person’s role and contribution in beginning of product. Any work not completed in class will be required for homework. You may present your information in a Prezi, PowerPoint, or documentary video. All written portions should be submitted with final product. If someone in your group is musically inclined, there are bonus points available for performing one of the songs from the Civil War era (music found on the Library of Congress site). Music must be appropriately placed in presentation.

Following the process of the American Civil War, you will find and document the following webquest:

  1. In Lincoln’s first inaugural address, find the statements that explain his position on state’s rights and slavery. Copy these statements into your INB.
  1. What did Southern newspapers report about secession of states and the establishment of the Confederacy?
  1. How did Jefferson Davis’s inaugural address differ from Lincoln’s? What was similar? Note statements in your INB.
  1. Locate two letters from soldiers during the Civil War-one Union and one Confederate. How are they similar/different? Document these by using statements from each letter (evidence).
  1. Find letters or journals from surgeons during the Civil War. What was war like from their perspectives. Give evidence.
  1. View the images from the photography collection. Write about your thoughts about 5 or more of images and what do they tell you about the war.
  1. Choose two cartoons to interpret and discuss what they revealed about the time.
  1. Music of the Civil War- Choose one of the two pairs of songs to compare.
