How will this service benefit you?

Mentoringhasbeenusedasa meansofsupportinganddevelopingstaffinhigher educationforsometime. Thereisincreasinginterestinthevalueofthisactivityfor GeneralPractice,particularlyatatimeofchangeandstressintheprofessionasa whole. Therearemanypotentialbenefits:

1.Service usersappreciatereceivingtheundividedattentionofafellowprofessional, who,whilstnota memberof theirpractice,understandsthecomplexitiesoftheir job,withoutbeingcloselyinvolvedwithparticularagendas.

2.Service Users findthesesessionsfacilitatetheirprofessionaldevelopment,help clarifyeducationalneeds,andofferameasureofpersonalsupportforthemin theirwork.

3.Facilitatorsfindtheexperienceofmentoringrewarding;itchallengesandextends theirownprofessionaldevelopment. Service Usersfrequentlyuse their own experienceof beingmentoredto goonandbecomeFacilitatorsthemselves.

WhatisaFacilitator?

AFacilitatoris anestablishedGP, Practice Nurse or Practice Manager, andrespectedpeer,whooffers,throughan on-goingprofessionalrelationshipwithhisor herService User,opportunitiestodevelop, stimulateandmaintaintheirprofessionaldevelopmentby:

• Discussinganycurrentprofessionalconcerns

• Providingspaceandtimeto reflecton,andevaluatetheirwork

• Helpingtoidentifyfurtherlearningneeds

• Offeringhelpandsupportwithpersonalandprofessionaldevelopment

AllFacilitatorsintheHEEKSS PCWR teamareappropriately trained,and supportedintheirworkby thePCWRProject Teamand other experiencedFacilitatorcolleagues. Theyareall boundbytheethicalcodeof confidentiality in both a personal and professionalcapacity.Primary Care FacilitatorsareaccountabletoHealth Education England working across Kent, Surrey & Sussex (HEEKSS).

Whereandwhendo these sessionstakeplace?

ThedecisionastohowoftenyoumeetwithyourFacilitatorisforyoubothtodecide, based onyourindividual requirements. Generally,meetingsshould take place4or5timesayearandthemeetingsnormallylast1–1½hoursoveraperiodof 12-18months.Themeetingplaceisamutuallyconvenientone- althoughyourFacilitatormightsuggesta'neutral'meetingplace,awayfromthehasslesoftheworkplace.As mentoringsessionsareconsidereda professionalactivity,socialvenuesareusually avoided.

Howdoesthe PCWRS work?

Astheservice user,youdecidethecontentandagendaofyoursession-yourFacilitatoris theretofacilitateyourthinking,notcontrolit. Youdonothavetohaveaspecific

'Problem'toaskforsupport-theworkisfocussedondevelopingyourprofessional well-being,to supportyouingettingthebestoutofyourworkinglife.

HowdoIjointhePCWRSProject?

Ifyouwouldliketoparticipateinthisproject,pleasecompletetheService UserApplication Form,andreturnittothePrimary Care Workforce Development team,whowillthenprocessyour applicationandput youin touchwitha proposedFacilitator.

PleasenotethatweaimtomatchaService UserwithaFacilitatorwithintwoweeksofreceipt oftheapplicationform.Thistimeperiodallowsforbasiccheckstoensurethematching is appropriate.Weaskallpotentialservice usersto declarewhethertheyaresubjectto professionalorcriminalproceedingstoensureweareabletorespondtotheirneeds appropriately.Sucha declarationmayleadtoa senior member of the PCWRS Teamtelephoningto ensuretheyunderstandtheprofessionalboundariesinherentwithinthe programme.

WhatifIamnothappyonceIjoin?

IfforanyreasonyouareunhappywiththeFacilitatoryouhavebeenallocated,pleaselet thePCWRS Teamknow,bycompletingtheappropriateforms,andyouwillbeput intouchwithadifferentFacilitator.

If youhaveanyissuesinyourrelationshipwithyourFacilitatorthatarecausingyou difficulties andthatcannotberesolvedindiscussion withyourFacilitator,youshould initiallyfollowthesesteps:

CriteriaforPrimary Care Service Users

1.Followingtheinitialmeetingwithhis/herFacilitator,theService Usermustcomplete andreturntheReportafterfirstPCWRSSessionsheet. Inthis,he/shewill indicateiftheywishtocontinuefurthermeetings,orbeallocatedadifferent Facilitator.

2.Attheendofeachofthemeetings, theFacilitatorandthe Service Userwillcomplete togetherandsignaRecordingSheetReport(suppliedbytheFacilitator)giving outlinedetailsofthesessionandthiswillbereturnedto thePCWRS Team.

3.Attheconclusionofeachmeeting,theService Userandthe Facilitatorwillreviewtheir positionanddecidewhethertoarrangefurthermeetings.

4.AttheendofthementoringsessionstheService Userwillberequiredtocomplete and return an‘ExitEvaluation’ questionnaire giving feedback on theirPCWRSexperience.

5.AllinformationsuppliedtotheGP Mentor TeamisConfidentialandwill be availableonly to thePCWRS Team. HEEKSSFacilitatorsare accountableintermsoftheirstandards,on-goingeducation,developmentand commitmentasaFacilitatortoHEEKSS.

6.The Facilitator/Service Usersessions should be documented and included in the individuals Personal DevelopmentPlan(PDP) portfoliosand presented as partofthedocumentationfortheirAnnualAppraisal.

7.Service Usersshouldbepreparedtotravelareasonabledistance,if necessary,tomeettheirFacilitator.

8.ParticipatinginthePCWRSschemeasaService Userimpliesacommitmentto theprocess.

9. IfService Users declarecurrentprofessionalorcriminalproceedingstheyshould bewillingtodiscusstheircircumstances,inconfidence,withaseniorPCWRS Teammember.
