2017-2018 Expectations Contract

Mission Statement:

  • Promote and uphold Cardinal Pride, unity and school spirit.
  • Represent Jacksonville High to the highest degree.
  • Set an example of good behavior and sportsmanship at all times (whether in uniform or not)
  • Promote friendship with each other and with schools with whom we compete, perform at.
  • Promote the development of lifelong values and skills in cheerleading and in life.

General Rules of a Cheer Cardinal:

  • By being part of an athletic team, you are accepting the fact that your actions are more prominent than those not associated with such an activity. Because of this, exemplary behavior is mandatory at all times, anywhere in the community and at all school functions where you are recognized as a representative of Jacksonville High
  • NO gum during cheerleading activities
  • NO colored nail polish while cheering at games
  • NO jewelry of any kind during practice or games
  • NO cell phones during cheerleading activities
  • NO PDA or other inappropriate behavior during a cheerleading event
  • Tattoos cannot be visible in uniform.
  • Hair must be up and off shoulders in a ponytail at all practices and games (unless otherwise noted by coach)
  • Must wear undergarments that do not show at games, practices and or any event where you are representing JHS Cheerleading
  • Always show respect for yourself, your teammates, coaches and your school which you represent.
  • No rude or disrespectful behavior towardsteachers, coaches, teammates, fans, or opposing team
  • No inappropriate posts are permitted in or out of uniform on any social media sites
  • Cheerleaders must display proper behavior in class, including being on time, not skipping and not cheating.
  • Any Illegal Activity (including, by not limited to: Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking, Shoplifting, Fighting etc.) may result in administrative consequences and/or dismissal from the squad.

Grades:

  • A minimum of 2.5unweighted GPA must be maintained throughout the cheering season.
  • Because cheerleaders are students first and athletes second, progress reports and report cards will be turned in so the coach can monitor academic progress
  • If an F is written on your report card, a meeting will be scheduled to discuss a plan of action to increase grade.

Attendance at Practice, Games, & Mandatory Events*:

  • You must be present for at least half of the school day in order to participate in a game, practice, or pep rally
  • Prompt attendance is required for all cheerleading activities- Remember, If you are on time, you are late.
  • Cheerleaders must ALWAYS notify the head coach PRIOR TO when they are going to be absent from any cheer practice, game, appearance, or performance.
  • Excused absences: Please reference OCS Policy 4400

Consequences for unexcused absences:

  • Benched during the next game.
  • If a cheerleader must sit out of a game, they must sit alone with the coach and be in uniform without cell phone.
  • Participation in other activities or jobs should not interfere with your role as a JHS cheerleader.

Rules for Practices:

  • Be dressed out(in designated cheer clothes), mats out, and ready at starting practice time
  • No cell phone use during practice
  • Practice is team time- not individual or social time.
  • If you are on time YOU ARE LATE

Rules for Games:

  • You are there to cheer and support JHS-Cardinal Pride
  • NO cell phone use during games (Cell phone use is only permitted at half-time. Any other time, phones and other electronic devices must be stored in your gym bag. )
  • You may use the bathroom only during halftime or in emergency situations
  • After halftime, you need to be in your line-up with two minutes left on the clock
  • When not cheering, jumping, or showing spirit, you are to bein ready position, facing the game
  • After the game, you must clean up cheer area, put all cheer materials away, and check with your coach before leaving
  • Cheerleaders are required to ride the bus to and from all games.

During stunting:

  • NO TALKING while the stunt is “up”
  • Always be alert and mindful when stunting-Keep focus, eyes on group
  • Be positive and use constructive criticism when reviewing stunts

Consequences of misbehavior during practice, games, or mandatory events*:

  • 1st – verbal warning
  • 2nd – conditioning(half mile, 20 push-ups, 20 lunges, 20 crunches)
  • Dress Code:
  • Care of uniforms and spirit wear is to be excellent at all times. If lost, damaged, or stolen, the cheerleader is responsible for paying the replacement costs.
  • It is suggested that each individual cheerleader writes their name on the tag of their purchased cheer apparel.
  • Do not perform any alterations on your uniform without coaches’ permission.
  • As a cheerleader for JHS, you are expected to follow the JHS dress code while at school. You should always wear appropriate clothing outside of school as well. Please use your best judgment when selecting your outfit. Remember, you are a representative of your school throughout the community.
  • Cheer shorts should only be rolled once.
  • Spandex is not an appropriate form of shorts.
  • Cheerleaders are expected to wear the appropriate undergarments(Black Sports Bra), shoes and Black Spandex (No Logos) when wearing their cheer uniform.

Academics/Discipline:

  • Cheerleaders at JHS must maintain passing grades in 3 out of 4 classes with an unweighted 2.5 GPA and should not develop behavior/discipline problems in class. If you are failing a class, or have become a discipline problem in a class or been assigned ISS/OSS, you will adhere to the consequences of sitting out at games and/or dismissal of squad. Consequences will mirror those outlined in missing attendance to games (above).
  • *Coaches reserve the right to amend, change, or add additional information to this contract at any time during the season with written notification.

Congratulations for making the Jacksonville High School Cheerleading Team! By making the cheerleading squad, realize that you are making a commitment to Jacksonville High School, your coaches, your teammates, and yourself for the complete season. The decision to be a member of the JHS cheer team should not be taken lightly. You will be expected to put cheerleading as one of your top priorities. Furthermore, as a representative of JHS, you must maintain proper behavior at all times. You must follow the cheerleading guidelines set forth in the Jacksonville High School Cheerleading Expectations Contact. Students who break the rules will be disciplined. By making this commitment to the Jacksonville High School Cheerleading program, you will receive many valuable and rewarding educational experiences that you will remember long after you graduate from high school. These activities will not only channel your enthusiasm and spirit in a constructive and beneficial manner, but will give you a sense of pride and accomplishment in being a part of a group that has earned the reputation as one of the finest Jacksonville/ Onslow County has ever seen.

I have read and understand what is expected of me as a JHS cheerleader in accordance with the 2017-2018JHS Cheer Contract. I will abide by these rules and understand that if I choose not to, the aforementioned consequences will be set in place. I also understand that my actions and behavior can affect my placement on a future squad.
