No.1 Waitanyuan, which is also known as the Former British Consulate building, is one edifice in the sprawling complex of historical Waitanyuan treasures. Waitanyuan, meaning “Source of The Bund” in mandarin, is a magnificent historical complex located at the northernmost tip of the Bund, Shanghai’s iconic riverside embankment, characterised by world-class period architecture and views of the Pudong business district.

No.1 Waitanyuan is a testament to the history of Shanghai, a reminder of a once bustling commercial port at the very centre of art, culture, trade and commerce. With a blend of European architectural styles, Waitanyuan is a stunning example of concession-era Shanghai and includes the former British Consulate Building (1849), the former Consul’s Residence (1882), the former Union Church (1886), former Church Apartments (1899) and the Former Shanghai Rowing Club (1905).

The former British Consulate,No.1 Waitanyuan, the centrepiece of the historical complex and oldest edifice on the Bund, was listed under Outstanding Modern Architecture in 1994 and a Key Cultural Relic under State Protection in 1995.
