PRESS RELEASE – For Immediate Release - 16 November 2018

Universally Adored Country Troubadour Mary Gauthier announces Sligo Date.

Regarded as one of the finest songwriters of her generation, Mary Gauthier will need no introduction to her legions of fans across Ireland. Hawk’s Well Theatre is delighted to welcome this legendary artist to its stage –supported by Irish Artist Ben Glover, Sunday 5th of May.
This popular folk singer is really a short story writer who can telegraph entire lives in the matter of a few verses and intriguing chords, then deliver them with the kind of voice capable of tearing our insides in two. Gauthier has chalked up a selection of unforgettable songs in a career that has seen her universally lauded by critics and adored by fans all over the world.

Her six albums have received countless accolades. The songs of Louisiana native-turned-Nashville resident Gauthier (it’s French; pronounced Go-SHAY) have earned praise from Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, and been recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Blake Shelton, Boy George and many others. Her stage repertoire contains renowned songs, such as ‘I Drink’, ‘Drag Queens in Limousines’ and ‘Karla Faye’ — which addresses the famous fate of that convicted killer, but starts out with lines that undoubtedly reference their author as well: ‘A little girl lost, her world full of pain. He said it feels good, she gave him her vein’.

“As a songwriter, I’m always trying to go to the deepest possible place inside of me. Past the navel-gazing, past the self-conscious, to get to that ‘we,’” Gauthier explains. “’Cause deep inside of all of us is the universal. And that is an artist’s job, to transcend the self. I’m in there, but then hopefully, it goes past that and it hits something far, far bigger and more important than me. That’s what I’m aimin’ for every time I write.”

Gauthier, a teen runaway who attended college in Louisiana and operated a Cajun restaurant in Boston before getting sober, long ago learned how to go with the flow. “I find the stories I want to tell are the stories of characters who may or may not make it,” says Gauthier. Though she’s no longer dangling on that precipice, she adds, “I believe in redemption. I needed redemption; I continue to need redemption.”

This tour brings her to Sligo with a good friend – Ben Glover, a fast-emerging talent from Glenarm, Northern Ireland, now resident in Nashville and making a real name for himself as a writer and performer.

Tickets for the show are priced at €20/18conc, and you can book your place to this unforgettable concert by calling the Hawk’s Well Box Office on 071 916 1518 or by visiting
