for Academic Staff
INFORMATION SHEET
The DCU President’s Research Awards were instituted in 1998 to recognise outstanding achievements of academic staff in research at DCU. The nominee must have been a member of academic staff for at least 5 years. The purpose of this award is to recognize and encourage overall research excellence. Nominees must have a research track record and profile which identifies them as leaders in their respective fields of research.
Two awardswill be made; one for research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Business, Education and related areas and the other for research in the Natural Sciences, Health, Engineering and related areas. The value of each award is €2,500.
NOMINATION PROCESS
The entire selection process for these awards is treated in the strictest confidence.
- The candidate must be nominated by two members of academic staff.
- The nominee must express a willingness to accept the award by signing the application form.
- No member of staff may nominate more than one person for any award in any one year.
- Previous award recipients are not eligible to apply under the scheme.
- Two letters of endorsement, one from each of your nominators, must be submitted by the applicant together with the nomination form.
CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD
The award shall be made for contributions under the following headings:
Publications and Scholarly Outputs:Publications: Evidence of high impact and sustained body of work. High impact may be defined as publications in journals with high impact factor, highly cited publications within field of specialism, cited books and chapters or scholarly output that had a major impact in the relevant field. Scholarly Outputs: Showing significance of the contribution to the nominee’s discipline and subsequent impact. / 50
Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Supervision:
Postgraduate completions and supervision of PhDs, Masters by Research and Postdoctoral fellows. / 10
Research Funding:
PI on a significant number of major grant awards within the field of specialism. Evidence of active research programme. / 10
Prestige:
Evidence of prestige may include involvement in some of the following:
- Editorships and Editorial Boards
- Invited National and International Keynote Lecturers
- External Examiner for research degrees
- Research Review Panels (national and international)
- Conference Advisory and Scientific Committees
- Hosting of International Conferences
Research Leadership within DCU and Externally:
Evidence of some of the following:
- Leadership of Research Cluster/Centre/Institute
- Evidence of Internal Collaboration
- Development of Research Postgraduate Programmes
- Implementation of Research Strategy activities
- External Research Collaborations
- Engagement with Enterprise
Other Achievements:

SELECTION PROCESS
The Vice-President for Research and Innovation will convene a selection panel drawn from the membership of the Research Committee and Senior Faculty. The reviewing panel will consist of staff members who are not the subject of a nomination and who have not been involved in the nomination of a candidate for award. The Chair of the panel will be the Vice-President for Research and Innovation, or his nominee. The recommendation of the selection panel will be forwarded to the President for final decision. The selection panel reserves the right not to make an award or make more than two in any given year.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE AND TIMELINES
A single combined Pdf of the nomination letters and nomination form must be emailedto Research and Innovation Support at by 5pm on Wednesday,18th January 2017. The subject line of the email should be “President’s Research Award Application” and the Pdf attachment should use the following naming protocol, “HBE_PRA2017_Applicant Name” for Humanities, Business, Education and related areas and “S&E_PRA2017_Applicant Name” for Sciences, Engineering and related areas.
An email acknowledging the receipt of the nomination will be issued to thenominated member of staff within 24 hours of the submission. The successful candidates will be notified of the result by February8th, 2017 andasked to present a short lecture on the topic of his/her choosing duringResearch Day at the University on Wednesday, February22nd, 2017.Lectures are open to the public. The names of the award holders are enteredin the roll of honor placed in the DCU Library.
