President's Council Meeting Minutes

February 4, 2014

Diversity Advisory Council Report

Teresa Jones explained that the deadline for proposals for presentations at the “Are Your Roots Showing?” conference is the end of this month and encouraged President’s Council members to submit proposals. She also reported that the Diversity Advisory Council is working out the details to begin a film series at OC.

Damon Bell provided an update on the cabinet level diversity position. President’s Council members voiced their opinions on the appropriate title (Vice President or Director or ?). It was determined that the job description should be completed and then perhaps an employee survey will be conducted regarding the position’s title.

11th Grade Assessment

Damon talked about the 11th grade assessment; how the feedback was processed, the rationale for recommendations for next steps. President Mitchell explained that college readiness is a hot topic at community colleges nationally. He also talked about our new membership with The Education Advisory Board, a data collecting, research tool.

Presentation

Mary Garguile reported on an article “Reshaping the College Transition: Early College Readiness Assessments and Transition Curricula in Four States”. She explained the data gathering process and recommendations.

Web Update

Chris Schmechel spoke about web redesign, including information about Web Writing, CMS authors, content strategy, mobile apps and business objectives. The estimated time of completion is the end of spring quarter.

Plans for the Center

Jessica Thompson explained the plans for The Center for Teaching & Learning. There are three big projects currently in the works:

1.  Online training/support – providing support and guidance to new and existing faculty.

2.  New faculty institute – to help new faculty form connections across disciplines.

3.  Faculty mentors – providing an opportunity to recognize and use internal expertise to help promote excellence and innovation in teaching and learning.

Collaborative Strategic Planning Process

President Mitchell provided an update on the collaborative strategic planning process. He explained the next steps including upcoming conferences for which he encouraged President’s Council members to promote. On April 11th there will be a Visioning Conference and May 9th a Goals Conference.

Committee Restrictions

Mark Harrison spoke about limiting the number of attendees serving on committees. President Mitchell asked Mark to gather data and provide feedback about this issue.
