Presidential Book Report Project

DUE DATE: FEB 14TH

In conjunction with our Social Studies and ELA curriculum, you will be doing a research project on a past president of the United States. You will be expected to prepare an oral speech about your administration. (Girls can research their president and give their speech as First Lady if they choose to.) Your speech will help us learn about the history of our time and effect that the president has had on our country.

You must find a book from our library or your local library about your president. You will use the library book, encyclopedias, and the Internet to find the following information:

  1. In your speech, include the following information.
  1. What party did you belong to? (Democrat or Republican)
  2. What years were you in office as president?
  3. What was your nickname and how did you get it?
  4. Who was your vice-president and what became of him?
  5. What was happening in the USA during your administration? (War, slavery, etc…)
  6. Choose 2 laws, policies, bills, acts, programs and/or special accomplishments you proposed and passed? Explain the effect these had on our country.
  7. Tell about the president’s childhood. Where did he live? What was his family like? ETC…
  8. Tell about the president’s family (wife and kids). Where did they live? What became of them?
  9. The First Lady always works on a special project. What special project did the First Lady work on during your presidency? (Mrs. Barbara Bush wanted to fight illiteracy.)
  10. Design and explain what you created for your “extra mile”.
  1. Make a White House Portrait of your president. Your portrait will be placed in the “White House Gallery”. This portion will be completed during Art Class in school.
  1. You will come dressed as the President or First Lady to talk about your administration. (Do not spend any money for a costume. Remember, you can make a costume out of anything! Be creative and have fun!)
  1. The past presidents are invited to attend a “Red, White, and Blue” Luncheon to celebrate your administration.
  1. Bring in a red, white, or blue food for our luncheon. Please let me know what you’re bringing so we can plan a menu.
  2. Please put your food in a microwave safe container or aluminum dishes for easy clean up.

This is your chance to make history come alive. I’m sure you are looking forward to meeting past Presidents and First Ladies as much as we are.
