List other NAMI programs you have participated in and your role in the program (e.g. trainer, teacher, presenter, etc.):

1.  Why do you want to be an Ending the Silence Presenter?

I think it is very important to educate those segments of society that lack knowledge and training in the area of mental health to better service those with mental health challenges. People are challenged not only with the sigma of mental illness but with low self-esteem and self- worth as well. Educating care givers and people whom are essential and vital to a person’s support system could enhance not just knowledge but bridge the gap to positively influence a person’s overall self- worth. Although I’ve been in the mental health field since 1997, I feel that it is very important to share my knowledge with others as well as my experiences in the mental health field.

2.  What is it about your (or your family member’s) experience that you think the students will be able to relate to?

My mother has battled depression on and off for years. Although she did her best to shield my sisters and I from it when we were younger, as we got older we were able to tell she was sad. I learned early on to be more observant of her and oftentimes just be there to listen to her even if I didn’t totally understand all she cared to share with me. Just letting my mother know that I was there meant the world to her. And today, we remain very close.

3.  What does recovery mean to you?

To me recovery means that a person continues to have challenges in a given area but is receiving specific supports to address issue. Recovery also means to me that the person acknowledges the fact that they struggle to avoid their addiction.

4.  What are your views on treatment for mental health conditions?

At best, I strongly believe that evidence –based practices are the most effective. Successful treatment appears to be greatest when medication management is associated with counseling/ therapy.
