President Jeff DeMarre called the Regular October 10 meeting of the Board of Directors of Sumner School District No. 320 to order at 6:03 p.m.

Former Board member Toni Froehling administered the oath of office to newly appointed Board member Rick Hendricks.

Excused Absence

Moved by President Jeff DeMarre that the Board excuse the absence of Sherm Voiles and Greg Hanon from this Board meeting. Motion unanimously carried.

Approval of Minutes

Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board approve the minutes of the Regular September 12 Board meeting as presented. Motion unanimously carried.

The Board endorsed the Basic Education Compliance application for the 2007-08 school year.

The Board authorized the District to surplus items on the District Surplus Removal Listing.

The Board accepted, with thanks, Bonney Lake High School parent Kenneth Zandona’s donation of $3,075.00 for the rights to perform the musical Beauty and the Beast in the spring.

j.Resolution No. 2/07-08

Designation of signatory for payroll revolving fund warrants for disbursement of funds on deposit for the Sumner School District.

Recognition

a. Roll of Honor

On behalf of the Sumner School Board, President Jeff DeMarre acknowledged and thanked parent volunteer Candy Chastagner, who has served on the District’s instructional materials review committee for eight years; Sumner High School student Bryce Batemen, who has received a Letter of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program in recognition of exceptional academic promise; Linda Blum, Lucy Carrillo, Carolyn LeFevers, Bob Mitchell, Tim Sargent, and Diane Wright, all district teachers, who successfully facilitated students in Developmental Learning classrooms participating in the WASL Portfolio assessment; Krystal Stephens, teacher, who has been selected to be a present at the year’s Washington Science Teachers Association annual conference; professional development specialist Daniel Lysne, who was selected to be a presenter for OSPI’s Summer Institute; and the Sumner High School Marching Band & Color Guard, who participated in the 2007 Washington State Autumn Leaf Festival Parade in Leavenworth.

b.State Superintendent’s Learning Improvement Award

Victor Falls Elementary students have earned the State Superintendent’s Learning newImprovement Award and were recognized as a “School of Distinction” for increasing achievement in their mathematics and reading skills. Superintendent Mendoza introduced Victor Falls Principal Beth Dykman, who thanked the State, the District and the Board for this great honor.

Reports

a.Crestwood Elementary School Report

Principal Sandy Miller introduced 4th grade students Marcus Flecher, Madison Roberts and Jesse Beringer, and 5th grade students Rachel Stowell and Tyler Baker, who gave a glimpse into life at Crestwood and “riding the Crest.”

b.Special Services Report

Keoni Smith, co-director Special Services, gave the Board a brief overview of the Special Services Department, which includes: Title I, Highly Capable, Learning Assistance Program (LAP), English Language Learners (ELL), and Health Services. He also spoke about initiatives to look at effective program models and collaborative interventions.

c.Lakeridge Middle Educational Specifications Report

Co-Principal Steve Fulkerson introduced Tom Bates of BLRB Architects, who gave the Board an overview of the planning process, underlying principles and the design themes incorporated into the design concept for the new Lakeridge Middle School.

d.Applied Communications Report

Karen Black, Applied Communications teacher at Mountain View Middle School, explained to the Board how the District’s Applied Communications courses teach more than basic computer applications. The new courses began in the fall of 2005 with the opening of middle schools, and teaches how to effectively use programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint in reports and presentations, how to evaluate Internet sources and to keyboard effectively.

a. Simple Majority Vote for School Levies

EHJR 4204 would amend the Washington State Constitution and would provide that a simple majority of voters (50% +1) could authorize local school district levies. Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board adopt Resolution No.3/07-08 supporting EHJR 4204 allowing a simple majority vote for

school levies. Motion unanimously carried.

b. Voucher Approval

Moved by Mike Pavlik that the Board approve the vouchers as certified by the auditing officer. Motion unanimously carried.
