Stated Meeting, April 1, 2017

  1. CALL TO ORDER AND QUORUM

The Presbytery of Southern California convened on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at 9:00 am at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Los Alamitos, California. A quorum was present (14 of 20 churches).

  1. MINUTES

The minutes from the January 25, 2017, Presbytery Meeting were approved.

  1. FINANCIALS

Financials for February YTD were reviewed:

Reserved Church Plant Funds 1,832

Money on hand 2/28/17 $34,546

Presbytery VOTED to RECEIVE the financials.

  1. BY-LAW CHANGES

The following By-Law changes were proposed, and amended, as follows:

Article III, PRESBYTERY GOVERNING COUNCIL

Section 2, A - Members (Page 4)

Add the Chair of the Nominating Committee, making Council a total of 11 vs. 10.

Section 2, B - Election and Tenure (Page 4)

No governing council member may serve as a council member for more than three consecutive terms, except the Moderator and Vice- Moderator are limited to the two yearconsecutiveterms.

The Moderator may serve one additional year with voice, but without vote in an advisory capacity.

Article IV, STANDING COMMITTEES/TEAMS

Section 1, D, Nomination and Election Procedures, 1 (Page 6)

The Nominating Committee places in nomination one eligible person for each office to be filled. Public notice of the names of nominees shall be given ten (10) daysfour (4) weeks prior to election. Presbytery members may nominate persons for each office no later than two (2) weeks prior to the meeting by contacting the Chair of the Nominating Committee. Any person nominated shall have given advance consent to be nominated and been interviewed by the nominating committee to be considered. Nominations may be made from the floor of Presbytery if the person nominated is present or has previously provided written consent.

The following changes are recommended to allow more flexibility when committees find they need more members, if only for a short period of time.

The Pastoral Ministry Ordination Team (PMOT) consists of betweena minimum of four (4) and six (6) members.....

Section 4, CHURCH PLANTING TEAM, A. Membership and Terms (Page 11)

The Church Planting Team (CPT) consists ofbetweena minimum of four (4) and six (6) members.....

Section 5, COVENANT RELATIONSHIPS TEAM, A. Membership and Terms (Page 11)

The Covenant Relationships Team (CRT) consists ofbetweena minimum of four (4) and six (6) members.....

Presbytery VOTED to ACCEPT these changes.

  1. ELECTION OF COUNCIL MEMBERS

Moderator, Betsy Straeter, introduced the proposed council for 2017/2018 Term:

Stated Clerk:Bonni Carr, Second Term-Class of 2017

Treasurer:Rob Bates, Class of 2018

MPT Chair:Gary Watkins, Class of 2 018

PMOT Chair:Tony Osimo, Second Term-Class of 2017

MAGS:Andrea Messinger, Second Term-Class of 2017

Nominating:Curtis Bronzan, Class of 2018

Member at large:Shawn Reilly, Class of 2018

Member at large:Mike Clark, Class of 2018

Presbytery ELECTED the above slate for the Council of 2017/2018.

  1. MINISTRY PARTNERSHIP TEAM (MPT) - Gary Watkins

Chair, Gary Watkins presented the following pastoral changes and motioned to accept three pastors into ECO:

Christ Presbyterian Church of Lakewood has dissolved their relationship with Rev.Chris Logan in order for him to accept a call to South Bay Presbyterian Church.

Lisa Johnson, PCUSA, be accepted into ECO in a validated ministry at the ECO Synod Office.

Steve Miller, PCUSA, be accepted into ECO as an Associate Pastor at Trinity, Santa Ana.

Joe Pallikathayil, EPC, be accepted as an Affiliate Transitional Pastor at First Prebyterian Church, Westminster.

After examination by members, Presbytery VOTED to accept these pastors and congratulated Chris Logan on his new call.

  1. Guest Speaker, James Choung

James Choung, National Director of Evangelism at InterVarsity, spoke on discipleship in relation to various generations. Everyone in attendance received a copy of James' most recent book, Real Life.

  1. Lunch and MAGs

During lunch, churches broke into MAGs and continued discussion on how James' presentation can be lived out in our churhes.

  1. Guest Speaker, Dana Allin

After lunch, Dana Allin gave a presentation on Flourishing Churches.

  1. Church Planting Committee, Bill Crawford

Bill gave an update on our current church plants; Missio in Pasadena led by Len Tang and the Goleta Church Plant (now in Mission Presbytery) led by Becky Lahna.

  1. NEXT PRESBYTERY MEETING

A Pastor's retreat on Friday, October 6 followed by the meeting on Saturday, October 7, 2017, 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Place TBD

  1. ADJOURNMENT

A MOTION to adjourn was made and seconded. MOTION was APPROVED. Moderator Betsy Straeter closed the meeting in prayer at 3:00 PM.
