Preparing Career Ready Graduates

Dear Parents/Guardians,

State and federal laws require school districts in California to administer a state test to students whose home language is not English. Upon enrollment of a student in school, parents are asked to complete a Home Language Survey. This survey asks four questions regarding the languages spoken at home. When a parent responds with a language other than English to any of the four questions, the district is responsible for assessing the English language proficiency of the student. In California, the name of that assessment is the California English Language Development Test (CELDT) and the purpose of this assessment is to determine how well the student can listen, speak, read, and write in English.

When your child entered school, he/she was administered the CELDT. The results of that assessment are attached. These results have identified him/her as an English Learner, which means that your child is in the process of learning English. In Fresno Unified School District, when students are identified as English Learners they are placed in an English Immersion Program or an alternative program if a parent requests and it is available at the school. These programs ensure that English Learners receive daily instruction in English Language Development to help them learn English and allow them access to learning other curriculum such as mathematics, science, and social studies.

You are invited to request a conference with your child’s teacher where the CELDT results and instructional program will be explained. To schedule a conference, please call.

We encourage you to visit the school, volunteer in our classrooms, and participate in the school’s events and committees. If you have any questions, please call the school office at during school hours.

Sincerely,

Principal
