Monday – Friday 8:30am – 16:00pm inc. 30min lunch break. (Hours will vary day-to-day depending on examination/invigilators timetable)
[Main examination period: May– June
Supplementary period: November and January]
Senior Invigilator/Examinations Officer
Main Purpose: / To assist the Senior Invigilator/Examinations Officer in the smooth and efficient invigilation of examinations in accordance with the regulations governing those examinations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: / As a member of the invigilation team, you will be expected to:
  • Prepare the examination room and set out examination materials, according to seating plans provided.
  • Become familiar and ensure compliance with examination regulations laid out by the Joint Council for Qualifications prior to commencing first invigilation duties.
  • Assist in admitting the candidates to the examination room, ensuring a calm environment and enabling them to find their seats under examination conditions.
  • Assist in registering all candidates in the examination room.
  • Assist in the distribution of examination papers and any associated materials immediately before the beginning of the examination, to collect them at the end and to distribute additional paper and/or equipment as necessary.
  • Be prepared to assist candidates with special access arrangements, such as, extra time and supervised rest breaks.
  • Assist in the efficient and accurate timekeeping of the examination.
  • Supervise the examination candidates in a quiet and unobtrusive manner, being constantly vigilant to the exclusion of any other task.
  • Respond to candidates’ queries in accordance with the examination regulations.
  • Summon assistance, in accordance with the school’s procedures, in the event of an emergency or a query from a pupil requiring the professional expertise of a teacher.
  • Escort and supervise candidates who may need to leave the examination room in an emergency.
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to this position as instructed by the Senior Invigilator/Examinations Officer.
  • Attend all briefing or debriefing meetings as required.
  • Wear smart business attire throughout to promote a professional atmosphere within the examination room and the school.

Person specification: /
  • Good communication skills and a very high level of English – all communication with candidates is verbal.
  • Punctual and reliable– examination start times are immovable and it is vital for invigilation staff to arrive 30 minutes before the published start time of each examination session.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions, rules and regulations.
  • Co-operate and work effectively with other members of the team and other staff.
  • Friendly and professional manner when dealing with candidates.
  • Can deal with emergencies calmly under pressure.

Resources: / Invigilators are provided with the JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) ‘Instructions for Conducting Examinations’ booklet - yellow booklet that is present in every examination room. Invigilators are expected to familiarise themselves with the contents of this booklet prior to beginning their invigilation duties.

The post holder will be expected to carry out any other duties associated with the work of the school as may be directed by the Headmistress, commensurate with the grade of the post.

This job description will be reviewed and updated periodically in order to ensure that it relates to the job performed or to incorporate any proposed changes. This procedure will be conducted by the Headmistress in consultation with the post holder. In these circumstances it will be the aim to reach agreement on reasonable changes but if agreement is not possible management reserve the right to make changes to the job description following consultation.
