Abstract – These instructions give you basic guidelines for preparing camera-ready papers for inclusion in a special edition of the Journal of Arid Environments. Your abstract should be printed in bold as indicated here. It should not exceed 150 words. These guidelines are issued to ensure a uniform style throughout the series. Your cooperation in adhering to these guidelines is greatly appreciated.

Keywords: Put 5-8 words here.

  1. INTRODUCTION

Maximum paper length is restricted to 4 printed pages. Invited papers can be increased to 6 pages. The paper should have the following structure:

1.Title of the paper

2.Authors and affiliation

3.Abstract (at least 100 words)

4.Keywords (6-8 words)

5.Introduction - including motivation, aims (and for long papers structure of the paper), overview and references to related work (in separate section)

6.Main body - explanation of methods, algorithms, data used, instrumentation (sensors, systems, etc.), results and discussion

10.Appendix

Your goal is to adhere, as closely as possible, to this paper in appearance. These instructions have been prepared in the preferred format described below.

1.1 Paper Size

The symposium proceedings will be printed on Letter size paper which has dimensions of 21.5 cm (8 ½ inches) x 27.9 cm (11 inches).

mm / inches
Top / 25 / 1.0
Bottom / 25 / 1.0
Left / 20 / 0.8
Right / 20 / 0.8
Column Width / 82 / 3.2
Column Spacing / 6 / 0.25

Table A. Paper Borders

You should format your document to have equal column width, each with a width of approx. 75 mm (3.14 inches). The space between columns should be according to this column width. Type text single-spaced, with one blank line between paragraphs and following headings. Start paragraphs flush with left margin.

You should left and right-justify your columns. On the last page of your paper, try to adjust the lengths of the two columns so that they are the same.

1.2 Fonts

Use a proportional, serif font, such as Times New Roman. The font sizes to be used are specified in Table B. As an aid to gauging font size – 1 point is about 0.35 mm. The size of a lower-case “j” will give the point size by measuring the distance from the top of an ascender to the bottom of a descender.

1.3 Title

The title should appear centered in bold capital letters without underlining, near the top of the first page of the paper. The font type Times New Roman with a size of twelve (12) points is to be used. Use more than one line if you wish, but always use single-spacing. After one blank line, type the author(s) name(s), affiliation and mailing address (including e-mail) in upper and lower case letters centered under the title. In the case of multi-authorship, group them by firm or organization as shown in the title of these guidelines.

  1. HELPFUL HINTS

2.1 Figures and Tables

Graphs and other numbered figures should appear throughout the text as close to their mention as possible. Figures shouldn’t infringe upon the page borders. Do not group them at the end of the paper. Leave two lines above and below the figure. Figure captions should be below the figures and have a font size of 9. The title word must have the first letter capitalized and must be followed by an Arabic numeral and a period. The period should be followed by two blank spaces and the figure title should be single-spaced. Center the title over the full width of the column. Figures are to be indicated in the text as follows: “…As we see in Fig. 4, the finite difference method…”

0 Distance (m) 10

Figure 1. Relationship between distance and time for a 10-meter walk.

Figure axis labels are often a source of confusion. Try to use words rather than symbols. Do not label axes only with units. Figure labels should be legible, about 10 point sizes.

Tables should appear throughout the text as close to their mention as possible. Tables shouldn’t infringe upon the page borders. Do not group them at the end of the paper. Large tables may span across both columns. Table captions should be above the table and have font size of 9. The word table should have the first letter capitalized and must be followed by an Arabic numeral and a period. The period should be followed by two blank spaces and the table title should be single-spaced and in all capitals. Center the title over the full width of the column. Footnotes in the tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters. The footnote should begin with the corresponding lower case letter followed by a period.

While figures and tables are usually aligned horizontally on the page, large figures and tables sometimes need to be turned on their sides. If you must turn a figure or table sideways, please be sure that the top is always on the left-hand side of the page.

Illustrations must appear within the designated margins, but may span the two columns. Add a caption and number to every illustration. All halftone illustrations (pictures) must be clear black and white prints. Line drawings may be made in black ink on white paper. Authors who wish to include color illustrations for the CD version of the proceedings may submit an additional copy of their paper with the color images. All authors must submit a version of their paper with illustrations in black and white to be included in the printed version of the symposium proceedings and a version in color for the CD version.

3. Other recommendations

3.1 Equations

Equations should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper. The equation number is enclosed in parentheses and placed flush right. Leave two blank lines before and after equations. E.g.

(1)

where c = focal length

x, y = image coordinates

X0, Y0, Z0 = coordinates of projection center

X’, Y’, Z’ = object coordinates in ground

coordinate system

3.2Symbols and Units

Use the SI (Systeme Internationale) Units and Symbols. Unusual characters or symbols should be explained in a list of nomenclature.

Use either one or two spaces between sections, and between text and tables or figures, to manipulate the column length. Use two spaces after periods (full stops) at the end of sentences.

Make sure you keep to the symposium policy regarding deadlines and the number of pages allowed per submission.

3.3 Footnotes

Avoid footnotes, but if you need them, mark footnotes in the text with an asterisk (*); use a double asterisk (**) for a second footnote on the same page. Place footnotes at the bottom of the page, separated from the text above it by a horizontal line.

3.4Copyright

If your article contains any copyrighted illustrations or imagery, please include a statement of copyright such as: © SPOT Image Copyright 19xx (fill in year), CNES. It is the author's responsibility to obtain any necessary copyright permission. The copyright of your article remains with you.

3.5 Photographs

For papers prepared in digital form, images must be placed in appropriate positions in the paper. The resolution should be sufficient to allow proper quality hard copy reproduction of the paper (i.e. about 600dpi).

The Roman numerals used to number the section headings are optional. If you do use them, number INTRODUC-TION, but not ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS and REFEREN-CES and begin sub-headings with letters.

  1. EDITORIAL POLICY

Papers written as advertisements and/or commercial endorsements of specific products or services are not suitable for publication.

Papers accepted for publication or already published elsewhere shouldn’t be submitted.

5. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Sponsor acknowledgements should be restricted to the unnumbered footnote on the first page.

6. REFERENCES

References shall enable a librarian to supply the quoted paper/book to the reader. References should be cited in the text, thus (Smith, 1987b), and listed in alphabetical order in the reference section. The following arrangements should be used:
