CHEMISTRY 140

PREPARATION CHEMISTRY

FALL 2008

INSTRUCTOR:Gary Wolf

OFFICE HOURS:Before or after class

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide an overview of chemistry. It will cover topics such as philosophy and methods of science, atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonds, acid-base theory, oxidation and reduction, nuclear chemistry and organic chemistry. Understanding and application of algebra will be necessary for the successful completion of the course.

PREREQUISITE:Knowledge of basic algebra.

MEETING TIMES: Lecture: Monday through Thursday 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

TEXT: Introductory Chemistry third edition by Tro. Prentice Hall publisher.

GRADING:

*Laboratory Reports approx 10 @ 40 400

Tests usually 4 @ 100 400

Quizzes approx200

Homework 100

Final Examination 200

Total Points 1200

Grading is on a 4.0 scale. 90% or above receives a 4.0. Grade point = (percent -55)/10. No Z grades will be given. (Don’t ask!)

A new experiment(s) will be assigned every Monday and must be completed by Friday. These need to be turned in on the following Monday. If the labs are 2 days late, 50% of the score will be deducted. If labs are over one week late, no credit will be given. There are four tests, of Test #1-4, the low score may be replaced with the grade of a term paper about a chemical subject. Therefore, no make-up tests will be given. Tests must be taken on or before the scheduled dates. Quizzes cannot be made up. There may be up to 5 additional quizzes.

It has been shown that attendance is crucial to doing well in this class. I also encourage you to seek help if you are having any difficulties.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1.Understand the nature of science, specifically chemistry, and the scientific method.

2.Develop and apply techniques to solve problems based on stated or implied conditions.

3.Understand the language of chemistry.

4.Use science and specifically chemistry to understand the world around us.

5.Use critical thinking to evaluate the relevance and accuracy of information.

ETHICAL ISSUES:

The cheating policy for SFCC is stated below (WAC 132Q-04-060).

1.Any student who, for the purpose of fulfilling or partially fulfilling any assignment or task required by the faculty as part of the student's program of instruction, shall knowingly tender any work product that the student fraudulently represents to the faculty as the student's work product, shall be deemed to have cheated. Cheating shall be cause for disciplinary action.

2.Any student, who aids or abets the accomplishment of cheating as defined in subsection (1) of this section, shall also be subject to disciplinary action.

A student who is found to be cheating will be given a zero for that assignment or test and Oct be suspended or dismissed from this class.
