Prenatal Outline (What to Expect)

  • What to expect every visit at your appointments
  • Obtain your weight and blood pressure every single visit
  • Dip your urine for glucose and protein
  • Listen to the baby’s heartbeat
  • Starting at 20 weeks we will measure your belly
  • If you ever have any questions during or after office hours, we always have a nurse you can speak with.
  • Initial Prenatal Visit (around 10-12 weeks gestation)
  • This is the longest visit during your pregnancy
  • We will discuss the contents of your first trimester packet
  • Representative will review your insurance coverage/benefits so you will have an estimate of what your cost will be. Global amount due by 28 weeks.______Remember if your insurance changes throughout your pregnancy, please notify us immediately so we can assure your coverage is correct.
  • Expect to get undressed for a pelvic and breast exam
  • We usually do a pap at this visit and cervical cultures (Gonorrhea & Chlamydia)
  • We do this each pregnancy for baby safety and because requested by pediatricians
  • We will draw your blood which includes a full prenatal panel, urine culture, and any optional geneticscreenings you may desire (Cell Free DNA/First Trimester Screen & Family Prep Screen)
  • 16 week visit
  • We offer an optional gender scan ($75 per baby collected prior to visit)
  • If you had cell free DNA drawn or a first trimester we will offer an AFP at this visit (test for neural tube defects)
  • Make sure that you complete the preadmission process online. Go to ghs.org/obpreadmit. This will allow the hospital to prepare for your arrival. Once you preregister you can contact the billing office at the hospital (454-2294) to gather information regarding the hospital cost for your delivery. The representative there can also set you up on a payment plan if you want to make payments toward your hospital stay.
  • 20 week visit
  • This is a good visit to include your significant other or any other family members as we will complete the anatomy ultrasound of the baby at this visit
  • If you did not have an optional gender ultrasound at 16 weeks you can find out the sex of the baby during this ultrasound if you desire to know
  • If you are having a boy, are you planning on a circumcision?
  • If so this will be done by the pediatrician before you and baby go home from the hospital (check your insurance benefits concerning coverage)
  • You will get your 2nd trimester packet which includes information on pre-registering for the hospital, choosing the baby’s pediatrician, prenatal classes offered, a sample birth plan, car seat information, and a checklist for setting up the baby’s nursery
  • 24 week visit
  • You will get your glucola drink and instructions to take home for next visit (this is a test for gestational diabetes)
  • Have you thought about breastfeeding vs bottle feeding?
  • If you are planning on breastfeeding, check with your insurance company about possible reimbursement for a breast pump and we can print you a letter at your next visit for you to send to them
  • 28 week visit
  • We will draw your glucola and check your hemoglobin
  • If you are Rh negative blood type you will receive a Rhogam shot at this visit
  • Your full global fee is now due
  • 30 week visit (you are now coming every 2 weeks for appointments)
  • You should know your glucola results by this visit
  • You will receive a TDAP injection (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis/Whooping Cough) at this visit per CDC recommendations
  • 32 week visit
  • We will prick your finger and check your hemoglobin at this visit
  • 34 week visit
  • You will receive your third trimester packet (if you haven’t already) which includes information on packing for the hospital, signs of labor (where to go), what to expect during your hospital stay, information on breastfeeding, and the GBS swab which we will complete at your next visit
  • If you are having a scheduled c-section, is it scheduled?
  • If so, have you received your c-section packet?
  • 36 week visit
  • Expect to get undressed from the waist down in order for your provider to do your GBS swab
  • At this visit we will generally check if the baby is head down by either performing a cervical check or using a small bedside ultrasound
  • We will prick your finger and check your hemoglobin at this visit
  • 37 week visit (you are now coming weekly for appointments)
  • 38-40 week visits
  • We will check your cervix weekly for dilation if you are planning on having a vaginal delivery
  • Expect to get undressed from the waist down at these visits
  • 41-42 week visits (if you haven’t already delivered)
  • You are now considered postdates and your provider will talk to you about antenatal testing (NST-Non Stress Test and/or BPP- Biophysical Profile)
  • You will also discuss plans for delivery with your doctor
  • Postpartum
  • If you had a c-section, you will need to schedule an appointment to see us in 2 weeks
  • If you had a vaginal delivery with no complications you will need to schedule an appointment to see us in 6 weeks
  • At this visit, plan on getting undressed for a breast and pelvic exam. We will also dip your urine for glucose and protein and prick your finger to check your hemoglobin
  • You will receive a 4th trimester packet in the hospital with information about what to expect after delivery and scheduling appointments for your baby to follow up with the pediatrician
  • Did you receive a Sitz bath to take home?
  • If you are experiencing any breast issues or any issues with postpartum blues or depression please call our office immediately and we can assist you
  • Remember we always have a nurse from our office on call after hours who can help you with any issues
