Call to Order / Introductions were made among participants. / C. Galston called the meeting to order at 10:04 a.m. and welcomed participants. Participants did self-introductions.Approval of Minutes from October 24, 2016 / Minutes from October 24, 2016, meeting were presented. / Motion made, seconded, and passed to approve the minutes as written.

- The 2017 Fetal Monitoring Lunch & Learn Webinar schedule and brochure have been made and registration is now open for this series.
- WAPC is on a calendar year membership plan. WAPC conducted an “I/We are WAPC” photo contest to highlight membership with the Southeast region as the winner; social media posts were made asking for photos and the winners promoted on Facebook and Twitter.
- Registration for the annual conference website and registration went live on 1/20/17; Members receive a reduced registration fee for the conference with their membership and can renew their membership when they register.
- US Preventative Services Task Force updated and revised their Recommendation Statement on folic acid in 2017, reaffirming their previous recommendations.
- More information about folic acid recommendations can be found in the January 10th issue of JAMA.
- E. Brummel shared that she is expecting her fourth child and will be on maternity leave by the next committee meeting; J. Jerome will be more involved with this committee in 2017. .
Committee members are encouraged to renew their WAPC membership for 2017 and encouraged their colleagues to do the same.
Committee members are encouraged to register for the WAPC 2017 Annual Conference and to also encourage colleagues to do the same.

- Joint efforts on Folic Acid Use promotion-Update on WAPC sharing of Folic Strong campaign-Next steps for committee
- Staff shared feedback from the attendees of the live sessions;Feedback was very positive and indicated that the information was helpful in improving the use of screening tools for depression.
- The Managing Hypertension and Diabetes is also available in the online classroom.
- CoINN team headed to Houston for training using NICHQ funds; recruited 4 clinics for this pilot group; The goal has increased emphasis on post-partum visits including scheduling before birth and education on what the visit entails as well as varying follow up types.
- LARC update: K. Gillespie shared news from DHS - Medicaid unbundled postpartum Long Acting Reversible Contraceptive methods (LARC) insertion from the birth billing bundle. This separate billing will allow better access.
- The Folic Strong Website is still active and available even though the state funding is no longer available. The UW Waisman Center’s Genetic Systems Integration hub will assume administration of the Web site.
Committee members can spread the word thatfacilities can bill Medicaid for postpartum LARC insertion separately from the birthing bundle. LARC insertion and the device is covered under Medicaid; K. Gillespie can provide an update about this initiative for the next meeting agenda.
WAPC will keep the communication open with the UW WaismanCenter Genetics Systems Integration (GSI)should there be any assistance WAPC and the committee can provide to their campaign; J. Jerome will provide an update from GSI when it is forthcoming.

-WAPC Web site: update the “What are we doing” tab of the pre-pregnancy section /
- All sheets that were slated for review and updating were completed. The Spanish translations were also updated. All sheets are now on the WAPC web site in the Pre-Pregnancy Health section.
- Thegroup discussed the format of the Handheld Maternity Record Patients still ask for this tool and seem to like the small size that can fit into their pocket or purse.
- A reduction in use of the Becoming a Parent materials was noticed and feedback from A. Brosowsky from Planned Parenthood in Milwaukee recommended wallet-sized items that can be tucked away thus remaining more private; J. Jerome created a JotFormversion of the first section of the BAP checklist ( was shared with the committee and discussion too place on the format.
- Reproductive Life Planning sheet-needs to be revised and added back to the WAPC web site; K. Gillespie shared that the CDC used PRAMS data to create a preconception document which may be useful when reviewing the WAPC Reproductive Life Planning sheet.
A workgroup was created to review in detail the usage feedback and Becoming a Parent materials: S.Gnadt, D.Schadewald, Carol Klingbeil (a UWM colleague of Diane’s), and C.Galston. C. Galston will ask a potentially interested colleague and email her contact information to staff. ; Other interested parties can email J. Jerome () to join this workgroup which will be planning a meeting for February.
Charlene will review her files in hopes of finding the Reproductive Life Planning document created by WAPC.
2017 Committee Activities
- Review 2017 Action Agenda-items related to Preconception & Prenatal Care
- Develop 2017 plan for specific activities
- Provide education via Webinar and other materials on promotion and supporting the use of human milk for infants (WisPQC initiative) was brought forth as a continuing education opportunity.
- Planning for Pregnancy sheets: it was proposed that new sheets be added: Hepatitis C, pregnancy and breastfeeding, HIV, chronic pain management and breast feeding, and information about chronic diseases.
- WAPC Folic Acid Position Statement updated to include the USPSTF 2017 updated statement as a reference; promotion of the WAPC position statement.
- Environmental health could be a program focus – There is a conference coming up Feb 17th and 18thin Madison regarding environmental exposure—“Making the Connection: Environmental Health in Wisconsin.” It will be held at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health. J. Wagner plans to attend and will let the committee know if there is preconception or prenatal care related information to share.
- LARC initiative between DHS and UW OB/GYN conducted a survey that found a need to improve provider capacity and comfort level surrounding LARC devices. K. Gillespie can share this survey with WAPC staff. WAPC was invited to participate in meetings regarding this new initiative.
E. Brummel will send out informationabout the environmental health conference for immediate sharing.
J. Wagner will share information about this conference at the next meeting.
WAPC staff will update the group on continued involvement in the LARC initiative and how this committee could potentially be involved.
Education on flu vaccination for pregnant women /
- E. Brummel is working to help promote flu vaccination for pregnant women via social media posts using CDC resources. See posts on WAPC’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
Leadership Development and Succession Planning /
- Many WAPC members are receiving information regarding the work of the committee however it isn’t clear how actively or passively that information is received.
Participation of committee members in meetings and succession planning /
- Committee members are encouraged to continue to recruit colleagues to participate. C. Galston is open to others on the committee who would like the opportunity to lead this committee.
