Attendance Policy

The Phoenix Union High School District believes that daily participation in classroom instructional activities is essential to earning credit in every course. Students may fail the class for the semester in any course when they reach a total of 12 excused/unexcused absences and after schooldocumented interventions have been exhausted. Parents will be notified by phone or by mail once their child has accumulated five absences and again at ten absences.

Reporting Student Absences by Phone

If a student is going to be absent for the day, a parent should report the absence by calling (602) 440-1600. This number is available 24 hours a day. Absences should be reported within 24 hours of the absence, but no later than 72 hours after the absence. The parent should give his name, the student’s name, his/her ID number, the reason for the absence, and the date of the absence when he calls to report the student’s absence.

Academic and Attendance Interventions

Students who are failing due to lack of effort in the classroom or because of attendance issues will be required to attend KKIS after school in my office from 3:00-3:30 daily until they are no longer in danger of failing this class. Parents will be notified at least twice during the semester by phone or through the mail if a student is in danger of failing the class.

Make Up Work Policy

If a student is absent, he will be given extra time to complete the work he missed. The amount of extra time he will be given is equal to the number of excused days he missed. Students will be able to complete assignments during KKIS time after school from 3:00-3:30 in my office. Certain activities such as classroom practice cannot be made up.

Tardy Policy

Being prompt is important for success in life, work, and school. Students are expected to be on time each day for class. Points will be deducted from bell work for students who are tardy to class.

Electronic Devices Policy

Cell phones, iPods, MP3 players, and electronic gaming devices are not to be used or to be visible to the teacher or the student for any reason during class time. A student caught handling or operating a visible electronic device, whether the device is on or not, will have the device confiscated by the teacher. For the first offense, the electronic device will be returned to the student at the end of the day. For the second offense and all future offenses, the electronic device will be turned into the security office and will not be returned to the student until the student’s parent has come to the school to meet with the teacher.

ID Policy

Students are to wear their IDs in their lanyards at all times. The ID is to be worn outside the student’s clothing, and it should be visible to the teacher.

Classroom Rules

Be on time. Be respectful. Be prepared to learn.
