What it means to be Pre-AP:

A main goal of this course is to instill advanced thinking skills, knowledge, and critical reasoning abilities. I expect the Pre-AP student to be on a path that leads them to taking AP Calculus or AP Statistics their senior year and taking the corresponding AP exam for college credit. The course is challenging, and Pre-AP students will be expected to extend the information gained in class and use their critical thinking skills to complete problems on exams that may not be identical to the homework.

Grading Scale and Policy:

This course grade will be based upon demonstrated mastery of the many concepts that are covered in this course. Mastery is developed during formative assessments (lessons, activities, practice, and quizzes), and then later that mastery is demonstrated in the summative assessments (test, projects). The weighting of these portions of the course are as follows:

Formative/Homework (includes warm-ups and

otherclass work, practice, exit tickets,etc.)10%

Formative/Quizzes15%

Summative Assessments (tests and major projects)60%

District Common Assessment (9 Weeks Test/ Semester Test)15%

-Formative Assessments: These various activities are designed for students to develop understanding of the material in the course. Some practice assignments may be for students to do just that – practice – and may not be taken for a grade. Some may be taken for a grade, in whole or part, to give students feedback on their level of mastery of that material. This formative feedback may also be provided by exit tickets, classwork, or quizzes.

-Summative Assessments: These tests or projects are intended to be a showcase for students to demonstrate that they have mastered the material.

-Each student must do his/her own work. Any form of plagiarism or supplying answers to others will result in disciplinary action and possible zero and/or retest.

Expected Behavior:

I have the right to teach, and all students have the right to learn. Anything that interferes with the teaching and learning environment will not be tolerated. Respect of authority, property and peers is expected of all students. If an issue of disrespect or disruption consistently occurs after I have conferenced with the student and contacted the parent, an office referral will be written.

Note: There may be occasions when an occurrence requires immediate office referral. This will be the decision of the teacher or substitute in the room.

Supplies Needed (EVERYDAY):

  • PENCILS or erasable pen
  • Loose leaf notebook paper or spiral notebook
  • 3-ring notebook or student’s organizational itemofchoice
  • Red pen and highlighter

Electronic Use Policy:

MISD policy, the Student Handbook, and the Code of Conduct allow students to carry cellular phones or other electronic communication devices during the school day, but they must be silenced and out of sight during class. At the beginning of class each day, students will be asked to put their phone/electronic device in an assigned space away from their person. The phone/electronic device must stay there until class is dismissed. If a student decides not to place their phone/electronic device in the assigned space, their phone must be put in their backpack/purse, silenced, until the class is dismissed. These devices will be collected if the student has an electronic device out during class. The third time the electronic device is collected the result will be a referral to the student’s AP.

Absences/Makeup Work:

Each student is personally responsible for obtaining missed notes, assignments, quizzes, and/or tests due to an absence. Each day’s lesson and assignment (excluding in class activities) can be found through my webpage on the current 9 weeks calendar.Homework assignments will be linked on the calendar and updated on a weekly basis.

Late Work Policy:

Students who are missing assignments are expected to complete the work. Missing assignments (including those accrued through absences) are to be completed in a timely manner as part of the unit course work. Below are the guidelines for missing work:

Turned in by the
Due Date or Retesting Date / Turned in after the Due Date
and prior to the end of the current 3 week grading period / Turned in after current 3rd week grading period
100% of Grade Earned / 70% of Grade Earned / No Credit :(

PLEASE NOTE: If the missing assignment has already been graded and/or returned, an alternate assignment may be given for the student to complete.

Retest Policy:

Students may retest ONE summative assessment/assignment each nine weeks. The retest must be completed within ONE week from the date the grade is posted for 80% of the grade earned. The requirements of retesting are as follows:

-all missing work must be completed and turned in prior to the reassessment

-attendance at tutorials is mandatory for reteaching prior to the reassessment. Tutorials will be scheduled at the teacher’s discretion.

Dishonesty: Each student must do his/her own work. Any form of plagiarism or supplying answers to others will result in a zero for all involved. Students caught cheating will be given a zero for the assignment and will be referred to their assistant principal.

Tutoring:

Before and after school tutoring is available. A student must obey all class rules in order to attend any session. Tutorial days and times will be posted in my classroom and on my website. There is also tutoring available during West Hour.
