In this Applied Knowledge Assessment, you will act as the tutor for a student who has e-mailed you some math questions. Please respond to the student, making sure you give detailed answers and show all work. The student’s e-mail to you is shown below. Please make sure you answer all of the student’s questions and show all work. You may either type up your work or print out this worksheet and scan it in to submit; your work should be typed or written on this worksheet.

This assessment is worth 35 points. You must show all work to receive full credit!

Dear Math Tutor,

I am hoping you can help me with a few problems that I am having in math. Can you please tell me if I am doing these problems correctly and let me know where I am performing miscalculations? Would you also be willing to explain, define, and give examples of some of the key concepts? My questions are listed below. Thank you for your help!

Problem 1: Distribute: -4(-x + y)

My answer:-4 • -x + -4 • y

-4x – 4y

Did I complete this problem correctly? If not, please explain what I did wrong.

Problem 2: Would you please define the following terms and give an example of each?

  • Distributive Property
  • Constant
  • Coefficient
  • Term
  • Identity Property of Multiplication
  • Identity Property of Addition
  • Like Terms

Problem 3:I am having a hard time with the following as well:

  • What is the difference between an expression and an equation?
  • Also, would you please provide me with an example of an expression and an equation so I do not get the two terms confused?

Problem 4:Can you please explain to me how I would solve this problem? Will you please show and explain all of the steps?

Also, is there a way I can check my answer to make sure it is correct? If so, will you please explain?

Directions for Inserting an Image into a Word Document:

  1. Scan your document(s) and save it (them) as a .jpg file. Save the images using file names that relate to the assignment.
  1. Open the Word document.
  1. On the first line of the Word document, please type the following:

“Last Name_First Name_Assignment Name”

(Example: Doe_Jane_U1L1_AKA)

  1. Save the file with a file name such as “Last Name_First Name_Assignment Name.”
  2. Place your cursor in the Word file where you want to insert the image.
  3. From the top tab, select the Insert option.

  1. Select “Picture.”
  1. Locate the file on your desktop. Click on the file and click “Insert.” The image will then be inserted into your document.

  1. The image will now be inserted into your file. It will look something like this:

Doe_Jane_U1L1_AKA

This is a sample Applied Knowledge Assessment file that will make loading assignments a lot easier!

*Note: To insert another image, simply place the cursor at the end of the image and press “Enter.” You are now ready to repeat the process until you have loaded all of your images for the assignment into one Word document!
