Pre-Afternoon Quotes:

COLIN MONTGOMERIE

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: But at the same time, I think expected to be somehow, they expected to be leading, and they weren't. So something had to change, you know. And expectation is always difficult then to achieve one's expectation; I think that they felt that just somehow they felt that, you know, we should be winning this, and they weren't. And that's all credit to the American Team. All credit to them. They came out and holed the putts that had to be holed, they did. And believe me, this thing is on a knife edge.

And this morning is so, so important for Europe to maintain that momentum, to get that crowd, to get that crowd behind us again, the way they were last night, was magnificent, the crowd and my play, and you hear them now just leaving, everybody, that's the buggy driver support; imagine the players.

So I'm just going down to the range to reiterate what was said in the locker room just before to the caddies and to the players, to make sure, because we know the Americans are going to come out fast, but we are going to go out faster.

Q. What did you say to them then when you say this complacency, or you don't want to use word, what do you say to them?

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: No, no, I never said that word. They knew what I meant. I just said, right, come on lads I can't tell you what I said.

Q. It's a secret?

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: Well, it's quite rude. But at the same time, I think what was said there was the passion that was required, we have the motivation for years, for two years, we have had the motivation, but I just felt it wasn't there it needed ignited and we must continue this. We must continue this, we must.

Q. You had lost the first two sessions and when the players walked on to the tee for this third session, the crowd were unbelievable, how big of a lift does that give a player? You've been there?

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: But we just lost these first two sessions by a fraction, and the last game in each one, we lost that bit and that momentum coming down the last hole. We lost the last section by a fraction. This is crucial.

As you can probably see, I've asked last night for the scoreboards to be changed, and all of the scoreboards now read blue, instead of the score boards on the righthand side that you really could not get a hang of what was going on. We've gone back, really, to the 2002 situation where the scoreboards are blue and that gives everybody a lift, and they all change accordingly. Let's hopefully for everybody in European golf, let's change in that right direction.

Q. You said just before the third series started you wanted to get back in level terms and now you're in position to

COLIN MONTGOMERIE: No, the goal is still anything beyond 8all is a bonus. Anything beyond 8all is a bonus.

If we can take a lead in the singles, great. If we can get back to 8all, great. To win a session 42 nowadays with the closeness of competition is fantastic. We have an opportunity, yes, to go ahead, only an opportunity. We haven't taken it yet.
