Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, you are the refuge of sinners and the comfort of the afflicted. You know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. By your appearance at the Grotto of Lourdes you made it a privileged sanctuary where your favors are given to people streaming to it from the whole world. Over the years countless sufferers have obtained the cure for their infirmities whether of should mind or body. Therefore, I come to you with limitless confidence to implore your motherly intercessions. Obtain, O loving Mother, grant my requests. Through gratitude for Your favors I will endeavor to imitate Your virtues that I may one day share in Your glory. Amen

Dearest Families and Friends,

Welcome back to the second semester. The first semester flew by. We are just beginning our Mid-Year Assessments. Please make sure that your children have a good night’s rest and are in test mode. As a school we are looking at the student average meeting and/or exceeding our goal of 2.0 grade levels above their grade.

We are close to completing “10 Years” at SNRCS and Archbishop John Wester will be here to celebrate with us on Tuesday, February 16. Please join us in this special celebration.

A reminder that priority enrollment will begin soon and we will send out the information prior to the start date. Please remember that if you invite a new family to visit SNRCS and they decide to enroll, your family will receive a $100 credit towards your tuition. Help us to spread the word about our fantastic school.

“Catholic Schools Week” is at the end of this month and into the first week of February. We will have a variety of activities planned by Student Council during that week.

Parents, please make sure that your children are in proper uniform. Mass dress is the white shirt and plaid skirt for girls and navy blue pants for boys, along with a tie and dark shoes. Teachers will notify you if they are out of uniform and a detention will be assigned to them. Please help us with this.

Please read the entire Angels Announce, as there is very important information about our school and upcoming events.

Thank you for all that you do and your continued support of Santo Niño!

May the blessings of Santo Niño be with all of us!

Theresa (Teri) L. Vaisa, Principal

Family Day on the Plaza

Thank you Santo Nino families for your support at our IL Vicino Fundraiser. Numerous families enjoyed pizza and sandwiches on Monday and helped us earn $350.00.

At 11:00am, we had an enchanted time at Collected Works Bookstore. They dedicated 2 staff members, Melissa and Lee to make us feel welcome. Melissa worked with our older students and did a scavenger hunt around the bookstore, while our younger students listened to a story told by Lee. We gathered for a

star ornament activity, hot apple cider and ginger cookies. When everyone was finished, Collected Works Bookstore allowed each student to pick out a free gift

of their choosing. We left the store with 20% off all the items we purchased. It was a great way to spend the morning.

At 5:00pm numerous students meet at the Main Public Library for a tour and storytelling. We started the night off by choosing a free book from a great selection of new, recently published books, a bookmark and a book bag. Walter then taught us the art of storytelling. Each student had the opportunity to learn and make up their own story. Walter's story was about a little boy who told his Father he was bored. His father instructed him to try and find the star princess. At the end of the story we learned the star princess was inside of an apple and each student got to take home their very own red delicious apple to tell their stories to their families. Walter was a great storyteller and host. Be sure and cut open an apple and see for yourself!

Thank you to all our families that participated, IL Vicino Wood Oven Pizza, Collected Works Bookstore and the Main Public Library!!

Join us for our next Family Day on Monday, February 15th at 9:00am at the Violet Crown for a free movie.

Counselor’s Corner

by Katherine Thrift, LPCC, SNRCS Counselor

The Counselor’s Corner is meant to be a resource for parents about children’s emotional and social growth and development. Parents can foster healthy emotional and social development in many ways. It is my hope that some of the perspectives offered here will support parents in this process.

SEPARATION/ DIVORCE COUNSELING GROUPS FOR CHILDREN WILL BE OFFERED IN FEBRUARY 2016: Deadline for permission slips: JAN. 29, 2016

Families in transition because of separation and divorce face special challenges. While the dynamic between the parents are at the forefront of this transition, the children in the family need to understand their place in this change, as well. Many children believe that they are responsible for their parent’s separation and/or divorce. The counseling groups will address this belief and allow the children to express their feelings in a safe and fun environment. Usually, because of the closeness and love between a parent and child, it is extremely difficult for children to share feelings with parents that are brought on by separation and/or divorce. They can sense their parent’s distress and do not wish to compound the sadness or anger that their parents are already feeling.

In the group, students will have the opportunity to acknowledge the many changes that come with this change in the family structure. Grief, guilt and angry or depressed moods can all be a part of a child’s experience at this time. The groups are intended to clarify these emotions and find a healthy way to express them.

Whether your family is new to this transition, or if it is ongoing, we hope that you will allow us to offer support and guidance to your child or children. If you choose to have your child participate, there is a short questionnaire to be completed by each parent that will help me understand the family’s background. This information is kept strictly confidential. I can also touch base with you by phone or in an individual meeting, if you have questions about the group or concerns to share. At the completion of the group, parents will be called so we can discuss any further issues or concerns or to set up a consultation, if needed.

The group will meet once a week for approximately 8 weeks. There may be more than one group formed, depending on the ages of the children participating. As always, I will work with the teachers to schedule the groups at a time that will have the least impact on the children’s academic work. The format of the group consists of a series of structured activities/exercises that are bound together into a booklet form at the end of the group for the child to keep. This booklet can then serve as a point of departure to discuss the family changes with your child.

I hope that parents will take full advantage of this opportunity to help their children adjust to these major changes in the family structure. Even if children have participated in the past, as children grow and mature in their ability to understand these situations, it is usually helpful for them to revisit the thoughts and feelings they currently have about the separation/divorce. In addition, even after many years have passed, there may continue to be family changes in the form of remarriage and/or the blending of families that must be adjusted to.

If you have any questions about the group and whether or not your child or children might benefit from it, please feel free to call me at the counseling office on Monday or Tuesdays.

DEADLINE FOR PERMISSION SLIPS: Permission to Participate forms are located at the front office and outside the counseling office and should be returned to the front office no later than Friday, January 29. Also, please feel free to call me at 428-7917 and let me know if you would like me to have a Permission Form sent home with your child (the signed permission of both parents is required, assuming joint legal custody). Also, please note that parents do not have to have been legally married for children to participate in the group.

9 Incredible Health Benefits Of Coffee

Just in case you needed another reason to enjoy a hot cup of java. Americans are drinking all day long and while this miracle brew has been besmirched with old wives’ tales that it’ll stunt your growth (false, by the way), coffee by the truth is brimming over with health benefits. Studies on coffee and health go back and forth. Some studies show health benefits, while others show negative impacts. This might seem confusing, but the reason is simple. Bad coffee is bad for you, and scientists don’t differentiate between types of coffee when they run the studies. Some say coffee can be a major source of mold. Which come with their own set of negative health consequences. But some coffees are moldier than others. In general, beans are cleaner than instant coffee. So pick a clean good bean and enjoy these 9 benefits from a healthy cup of joe.
