ENGLISH LANGUAGE PAPER

TOPIC:

SPEECH ON TEENAGE- SAFETY:

·  RAFT: Pay attention to the ROLE, AUDIENCE, FORMAT, TOOLS/TECHNIQUES OF WRITING

·  Direct address to the teenage audience/Casual tone/ informal style/(slang permissible)/appropriate use of tone/punctuations for a direct involvement of the audience.

·  The issue of ‘safety’ is to be dealt with in a manner so that it does not sound boringly moralistic to your intended audience and is yet convincing at the same time!

·  SOME USEFUL POINTS ARE GIVEN BELOW:

  1. Safety from peer pressure/Addiction of any kind/Choose friends carefully

2.  A suggested handling of the points- some sample statements are highlighted in blue; for instance-

“Would you rather look cool- fagging, showing off a cigarette in your hand, puffing out unbroken clouds of smoke- feeling you are on cloud nine or- would you rather not be an active smoker, burning your own life, and also, that of the multitudes of passive- smokers?”

3.  Safety about Where you go- shady part of town/ who you go with/ mode of transportation/ bikes/ fast lane driving/public safety/ going to places where it is easier to get robbed… Road safety/over speeding/breaking traffic rules:

“It’s fun to walk on the road, with hands free but your ears plugged- you would rather listen to Bruno Mars than to some road safety advertisemnet being flashed across the Billboards- yes, but life is not all about fun, my friends- or is it? You can either make it or mar it…and I’m sure you are with me when I say- life doesn’t give us so many chances! So grab it while you have it.”

  1. Bad habits… getting hooked on to media for wasteful activities at the expense of something productive/ passive activity than being an active participant
  1. Safty about health and hygiene/Unhealthy life styles/no exercise/ sedentary way of life/Awareness about HIV etc.
  1. Rules and laws in mind/ online/outside/ maintaining a conscious balance between freedom and responsibility
  1. Online activity/ talking to strangers/ cyber crime/ cyber- bullying
  1. Safety about disclosing your personal details to strangers
  1. Chances…

“…Coming to chances-our IGCSE this year is crucial for all of us- and while the thought of hanging out with friends may be the most enticing; the thought of freaking out on the weekend, in the famous discotheque may be the most formidable enchantress, more tempting than sitting grooved to your study table- practising past papers- but well… surely time is of the essence…Better to save your precious time now so you may be able to enjoy precious ‘time out’ later on in life.”

10.  Getting high…

you know too well now what I’m talking about- we all know the case of Sam – deported; can never enter the UAE- a country which we know follows strict rules and regulations- it’s temptation and temptation and temptation all the way my friends- but you have to decide what you want.”

  1. Wasteful habits/ whiling away time/rather, spilling it out of your hands
  1. Becoming a part of some cult/ mob action which may not be the right thing for you- the shocking realities like terrorism- you have got to be discrete, selective and well- focussed- use your own rationale/ discretion
  1. Don’t become a victim of wrongful time-management

14.  “Last but not the least- I do not desire to become a celibate- would appear to be one if I was to avoid the topic that may interest all of us the most…girls…”

15.  AN IMPACTFUL CONCLUSION: “Before I take leave, I might add that it is not cool to be unsafe…Poke your finger into the burning candle- it is bound to get burnt…”
