Teaching aids: White/chalk board. Animals diagram page (this can be reused on subsequent lesson as a learning reference), Animals flashcards, and a soft foam ball for playing conversation hot-potato
Learner objectives:
For all students to speak in English using the Animals studied and for advanced students to also use English to describe the relation of Animals to each other, Students should also have the opportunity to practice correct pronunciation. / Teacher aims:
Involve all students in an engaging lesson. Assess student learning.
Expose students to speaking English in a structured learning environment.
Procedure / Phase / Timing
Before class starts, the teacher will need to write on the board the names of the animals to be used during the lesson. The teacher should cover the words and reveal them as they are introduced during the lesson.
The teacher begins by asking the students what animals they know. Also ask them to describe the animals, their characteristics and where those animals might live.
*Prior to this lesson, the students need to have completed the lesson “Animals Introductory Lesson,” or two other animal lessons. This lesson is intended to be a study or review of previously learned knowledge about animals.
Show the flashcards to the class one at a time.
1)Ask the class to say the animal displayed on the flashcard.
2)The teacher models the correct pronunciation by reading flashcard.
3) The class re-reads the flashcard.
Paired work-
Allow student to choose which two of the four activity handouts they would like to complete with their partner.

Closing Activity:
- Write the following statement on the board “I like _(name an animal from the lesson)_” because they _(describe something about the animal).
- Practice saying the statement with the class five times using different animal flashcards.
- The teacher holds up an animal flashcard and says the statement, “I like _(name an animal from the lesson)_” because they _(describe something about the animal).
- Afterwards, the teacher holds up a different animal flashcard and gently tosses the foam ball to a student.
- The student who caught the ball repeats the statement “I like _(name an animal from the lesson)_” because they _(describe something about the animal)”, but adds their own details.
- The answering student then gently tosses the foam ball to a new student and the process repeats itself.
+If the students want to be funny and say what they DON”T like about the animal, that is okay also. The point of the activity is not to follow instructions to the letter, but to practice speaking and listening to English. / Engage
