Practices that have a Potential to Cause an Effect (P) are those with a high potential to affect historic properties when installed according to standard NRCS criteria. These practices are to be considered as undertakings with the potential to affect those aspects of cultural resources that are eligible for the NRHP.
Practices that have a Varying Potential to Cause an Effect (VP) are those practices that may affect aspects of cultural resources that are eligible for the NRHP if installed in one way, but might not if installed in another way. An example would be a practice that will not exceed the depth, or extent of previous cultivation. In a cultivated area, this practice would not have the potential to cause an effect. The same practice done in an area that was never cultivated would have the potential to cause an effect.
Practices that have No Potential to Cause an Effect (N) are those that do not affect aspects of cultural resources that are eligible for the NRHP. These practices can include management-related practices, practices without physical effects, or practices that experience indicates do not impact historic properties. These practices are not undertakings with a potential to affect historic properties and do not require cultural resources considerations.
