(v) European University Institute, Florence
The European University Institute (EUI) was founded in 1976 by the European Community Member States to provide advanced academic and cultural training on a European basis. It undertakes research from a European perspective in the human and social sciences: history, law, economics, political and social sciences. It welcomes research students, for periods from one to three years, who wish either to:
- take the Institute’s doctorate (normally three years)
- take the LLM in comparative European and international law
Teaching is largely in English (with some seminars in French) and there are excellent opportunities to improve language capabilities. The EUI has good links with the Commission (e.g. for traineeships, access to data etc.) Three-year grants are available to cover the costs of studying at the Institute.
Applications are made on forms which are available from the Institute and should be made by the end of January each year. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may apply for a place and an award. Applicants of acceptable quality (normally an upper second class degree) are interviewed in March in the department and definite decisions are made on the award of both a place and a scholarship in April.

(vi) College of Europe, Bruges
The academic programme at the College of Europe in Bruges offers students postgraduate training for their professional futures in Europe. The programme, which lasts one academic year from mid-September to the end of June, is taught through English and French.
The programme is built around four departments of European Studies: Law, Economics, Political and Administrative Sciences and Human Resources Development. To ensure a high level of specialised training, students enrol in one of the departments. Furthermore, students from all departments participate in the European General and Interdisciplinary Studies Programme to help them understand the process of European integration in all its complexity. A Masters Degree of European Studies is awarded on successful completion of the programme.

Information on postgraduate opportunities in the UK is available directly from individual universities. Catalogues and brochures can also be consulted in the International Education Office and at the Careers Service.
In addition, there are a number of websites which provided information on postgraduate opportunities in the UK:
(i) Funding
All EU residents are eligible for consideration for funding from the UK’s Research Councils, the BritishAcademy and Local Authorities, though this is limited to the fee element – no maintenance grant is given to non-UK residents. These awards are very competitive. In addition funding may be available from within the university, the college or department in which you are seeking a place, so you should always enquire about possible sources of funding. Oxford and CambridgeUniversities occasionally offer scholarships, specifically to Irish graduates - the Prendergast and Gardiner awards respectively. Relatively few courses in the UK are ATS funded, but when they are, maintenance is paid in addition to the fee waiver. Universities in Scotland and Northern Ireland appear to have most ATS funded courses.
