ELECTIVE GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL RESIDENTS

Electives can be offered to foreign residents currently registered in a postgraduate program outside North America. Eligibility is dictated by the CPSO and described in their document called Electives for International Residents: CPSO Registration Requirements. Foreign residents must complete the University of Ottawa Elective Registration Form for International Residents (below) and submit it to the University of Ottawa PGME Office along with the following documents:

  • CV
  • Copy of the Medical Degree from an acceptable Medical School, with English/French translation (if applicable)
  • Copy of the Medical School Transcripts, with English/French translation
  • Letter from the Program Director (or authorized equivalent) from the school of origin, testifying to the level of training and the abilities of the trainee.

Electives for foreign residents start with a two-week Pre-entry Assessment Program (PEAP). During the PEAP, the resident must hold a PEAP certificate of registration from the CPSO. Upon successful completion of the PEAP, the PEAP certificate automatically converts to a regular Postgraduate Education certificate for the remainder of the Elective. If the PEAP is not completed successfully, the Elective appointment immediately terminates. The duration of the Elective appointment, including the two-week PEAP, must not exceed six months.

Besides having to obtain an Educational Certificate of Registration from the CPSO, Foreign Residents must obtain CMPA coverage, complete the uOttawa immunizationrequirements and must also apply for a work permit to be entitled to work in Canada. This process can take up to six months. The PGME Office will provide a Human Resources and Skills Development Canada Labour Market Opinion to apply for the work permit.
